Moritz (1856) Gottlieb Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1856 - d. 1879

Maurycy Gottlieb (February 21/28, 1856 – July 17, 1879) was a Polish-Jewish realist painter of the Romantic period.[1] Considered one of the most talented students of Jan Matejko, Gottllieb died at the age of 23.

Gottlieb was born in Drohobycz (then Galicia in Austrian Poland, now western Ukraine) to a wealthy, Yiddish and Polish-speaking Orthodox Jewish family. He was one of Isaac Gottlieb and Fanya née Tigerman's eleven children. He was introduced to painting in Lemberg by Michal Godlewski. At fifteen, he enrolled at the Vienna Fine Arts Academy for three years. In 1873 he went to Kraków to study under Jan Matejko and became close friends with Jacek Malczewski. However, an anti-Semitic incident at the School of Fine Arts prompted him to leave Kraków after less than a year in spite of Malczewski's protests.[2] He traveled to Norway and stayed in Molde. He returned to Vienna and from there travelled to Munich in 1875 to study under Karl von Piloty and Alexander von Wagner.[3] In 1876 he won the Gold Medal at the Munich Academy for his painting, Shylock and Jessica. In the same year, he moved back to Vienna to attend the workshop of Heinrich von Angeli. He lived and worked in Vienna for the next two years and produced paintings with biblical themes, as well as illustrations for Friedrich Bruckmann Publishing of Munich.[3]

In the fall of 1878, Gottlieb travelled to Rome, where he befriended Henryk Siemiradzki. At a banquet in his residence at Via Gaeta, Gottlieb met with Matejko, who convinced him to come back to Kraków as one of his best students,[2] to work on a series of monumental paintings including scenes from the history of the Jews in Poland.

In 1879 Gottlieb settled in Kraków and began working on his new major project.[3] He died in the same year from health complications. Matejko attended his funeral and promised his father to look after his younger brother Marcin.[4]

Gottlieb won a gold medal at the Munich art competition for his painting, Shylock and Jessica (1876), portraying a scene from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. The painting was exhibited in Lviv in 1877, and in 1878 at Zacheta in Warsaw and widely acclaimed. Gottlieb based Jessica's face on that of Laura Rosenfeld, to whom he had proposed marriage. However, Laura rejected his proposal and wed a Berlin banker. Gottlieb planned to marry Lola Rosengarten, but when he heard about Rosenfeld's marriage, he knowingly exposed himself to the elements, dying of complications from a cold and sore throat.[5]

Despite his premature death at the age of 23, more than three hundred of his works survive (mostly sketches, but also oil paintings),[1] though not all are finished.[5] After the fall of the Iron Curtain, many Polish collections unknown in the West were popularized, and his reputation grew greatly. His brother Leopold Gottlieb was born five years after his death and became known as a painter as an adult.

          Sep. 29, 2024

Maurycy Gottlieb (Polish, 1856-1879) Lovers scene/biblical scene

          Est: $8,000 - $12,000

The lovers (from Adam Mickiewicz's poem 'Chatti [The Ambush]'), or perhaps, Haman begging Esther for his life (from the biblical Scroll of Esther). Oil on panel. 18.5x13.5 cm. Signed and dated lower right m. Gottlieb / 1876. Source: Private collection, Israel. (The painting has been in their family collection since the 1960s, when it was purchased by the current owner's parents in London, UK). Condition: minor scuffs at bottom center and left; Sporadic color loss elsewhere. Note 1: The reverse bears a label with a typewritten research document and statement of authenticity, dated 1957, prepared by Dr. Kazimierz Buczkowski, a Polish art expert active around the mid-20th century. On the label it says (translated from Polish): assessment: Oil painting on board. Dimensions: height 18.5 cm, width 13.5 cm. She shows in the foreground, to the viewer's right, a young woman in a yellow dress sitting on a chair. The woman holds her left hand in her lap, with her right arm resting on the arm of the chair. A man dressed in Polish clothes is kneeling to the left. In the background, on the left, two figures are seen - one of them with a shotgun in his hands. The picture is signed lower right: from Gottlieb and in the corner 1876. assessment: The described drawing submitted to me for inspection by P. Tomeshevsky is, in my opinion, an original work by Morrissey Gottlieb (1879-1856), a sketch for a composition that, as far as I know, was not created, interesting despite some oddities due to some oddities. For her color values, which play such an important role in Morrissey Gottlieb's work. The artist took the subject for this work from Mikiewicz's ballad 'Chatti' (in the foreground a pair of lovers; in the background the betrayed Vived with a shotgun in his hand and a Cossack next to him). In my opinion the signature on the painting is beyond doubt, especially compared to the signatures in Gottlieb's catalog of unknown works, published in 1938. As confirmed by X-ray examination with a Hanau [UV?] lamp, the image shows only minor retouching. Krakow 28 IV 1957 Dr. Kazimierz Buczkowski [hand signed and ink stamp] Note 2: According to Buchakowski this work is a study for a painting that ultimately was not created by Gottlieb (perhaps, due to his death a few years later at a young age). Buczkowski identifies the image as based on a scene from the short ballad Chety: Ballade Ukrainska by Poland's national poet Adam Mickiewicz, considered the greatest poet in all of Polish literature. The ballad, whose title has been variously translated as 'Ambush: A Ukrainian Ballad', 'The Guards' or 'The Watchmen', can be dated to around 1828. It tells the story of a Vivada (military leader or governor) who caught his wife cheating. He takes with him a Cossack servant named Naum whom he orders to shoot the unfaithful woman while he himself shoots her lover. However, the Cossack avoids committing the crime and instead shoots his master. The ballad was translated into Russian by the famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. In 1890-91, the Russian composer Piotr Tchaikovsky published a symphonic ballad called 'The Viboda, Op. '78 based on Pushkin's translation. (For more information about Adam Mickiewicz see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Mickiewicz. Note 3: Many contemporary observers of this work have commented that it may actually be "biblical" in essence, when they present the banquet scene from the Scroll of Esther (7:7-8) in which Haman throws himself at Queen Esther's feet, begging her to save him from the wrath of King Ahasuerus: "7 And the king got up in his anger from the feast of wine and went to the garden of the palace, and Haman stayed to beg for his life to Esther the queen, because he saw that evil had happened. Against him by the king 8 Then the king returned from the garden of the palace to the place of the wine banquet and Haman fell on the couch where Esther was.

The Lovers (from Adam Mickiewicz's poem 'Czaty [The Ambush]'), or possibly, Haman Begging Esther For His Life (from the biblical Book of Esther). Oil on panel. 18.5x13.5cm. Signed and dated lower right 'M. Gottlieb / 1876'. Provenance: Private collection, Israel. (The painting has been in their family collection since the 1960s, when it was acquired by the current owners' parents in London, UK.) Condition: Minor scuffs lower center and left; sporadic paint loss elsewhere. Note 1: The verso bears a label with a typewritten research and statement of authenticity document, dated 1957, prepared by Dr Kazimierz Buczkowski, a Polish art expert active circa the middle of the 20th century. The label reads (translated from Polish): JUDGMENT Subject of the judgment: A picture painted with oil paints on board. Dimensions: height 18.5cm, width 13.5cm. It shows in the foreground, to the right of the viewer, a young woman in a yellowish dress sitting in a chair. The woman holds her left hand to her bosom, with her right arm resting on the arm of the chair. A man dressed in Polish clothes kneels on the left. In the background, on the left, two figures are visible - one of whom has a shotgun in his hands. The picture is signed in the bottom right: M Gottlieb and in the corner 1876. Judgment: The described painting submitted to me for examination by P. Tomaszewski is, in my opinion, an original work by Maurycy Gottlieb (1856-1879), a sketch for a composition which as far as I know was not created, interesting despite some peculiarities due to its color values, which play such an important role in the work of Maurycy Gottlieb. The artist took the theme for this work from Mickiewicz's ballad 'Czaty' (in the foreground a pair of lovers; in the background the betrayed voivode with a shotgun in his hand and next to him a Cossack). In my opinion the signature on the painting does not raise any doubts, especially when compared with the signatures in the catalog of unknown works by Gottlieb, published in 1938. As was confirmed via X-ray examination with a Hanau [UV?] lamp, the picture shows only minor retouching. Krakow 28 IV 1957 Dr Kazimierz Buczkowski [hand signed and ink stamped] Note 2: According to Buczkowski this work is a study for a painting that ended up not being created by Gottlieb (perhaps, due to his death a few years later at a young age). Note 3: Numerous current observers of this work have commented that it may actually be biblical in nature, showing the banquet scene from the Book of Esther (7:7-8) in which Haman throws himself at Queen Esther's feet, begging her to save him from King Ahasuerus' wrath: "7 And the king arose in his wrath from the banquet of wine and went into the palace garden; but Haman remained to make request for his life to Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king. 8 Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the couch whereon Esther was. AFTER MAURYCY GOTTLIEB (1856-1879), YOM KIPPUR

          Est: $200 - $250

After Maurycy Gottlieb (1856-1879), Yom Kippur, gilded bronze plaque, measurements: 32.5X25 cm. * Maurycy Gottlieb; 21 or 28.2.1856 - 17.7.1879 was a Jewish-Polish painter. His last painting, "Yom Hakippurim", painted in the last year of his life (1878), depicts a synagogue after his memories from his hometown. This is Gottlieb's most famous painting, and he painted himself three times among the praying men: once as the young man to the right of the man sitting with the Torah book, once as the boy placed on his left, and a third time as a Bar-Mitzva age boy on the right. Also depicted in the picture are his mother and father, as well as his ex-fiance. It can be argued he "appears" in the picture a fourth time - on top of the Torah book in the center of the painting it is inscribed: "For the elevation of the soul of Moshe Gottlieb". The painting is part of the Tel Aviv Arts Museum's collection.

Maurycy (Moses) Gottlieb was born in Drohobych to a wealthy, Yiddish and Polish speaking orthodox Jewish family living in Galicia, one of eleven children of Isaac Gottlieb and Fanya Tigerman. At 15 years of age, Gottlieb enrolled at the Vienna Fine Arts Academy, where he studied for three yers, before leaving for Krakow in 1873 to study under Jan Matejko. He is considered to be one of the most talented painters to have ever studied under Matejko. In Krakow, Gottlieb also became good friends with Jacek Malczewski, who was a proponent of Gottlieb`s art and fiercely protested when anti-semitism forced him to leave the Krakow Academy. In the next years, Gottlieb lived and worked in Vienna, Munich, and Rome, where he became friends with Henryk Siemiradzi. At a reunion with Jan Matejko in Rome, he was convinced to move back to Krakow by Matejko, where he worked on a series of paintings including scenes fromt the history of the Jews in Poland. Gottlieb`s life took a tragic turn, due to his romantic relationship with Laura Rosenfeld, the subject of many of his paintings including "Shylock and Jessica," for which he won a gold medal in Munich. Having originally accepted a marriage proposal made to her by Gottlieb, Rosenfeld eventually lost interest in the young painter, and confessed that she had fallen in love with someone else. With a broken heart, and hearing about her impending marriage with a Berlin banker, Gottlieb knowingly exposed himself to the elements, dying at the age of 23 from complications due to a cold and sore throat. Despite his tragically young demise, in his short life Gottlieb managed to complete over 200 works, including paintings and sketches. The present artwork, illustrating a scene from Nathan the Wise, a verse drama written by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing in 1779, was a favorite subject of Gottlieb`s paintings. The play dealt with themes of religious tolerance and identity, recurring themes in Gottlieb`s own works. It is no wonder, then, that one of the essays written for the exhibition catalogue of the 1991 retrospective of Gottlieb`s works in Tel Aviv in Warsaw, was entitled "Maurycy Gottlieb: Ahauser and Dreamer. A Polish-Jewish or Jewish-Polish artist?".

He was born in Drohobych (at that time Austria-Hungary), Galicia, modern Lviv region, western Ukraine. At fifteen, he was enrolled at the Vienna Fine Arts Academy. Later, he would study under Jan Matejko in Kraków. After experiencing anti-semitism from his fellow students, Gottlieb left Matejko's studio after less than a year, returning to Vienna to explore his Jewish roots, having been raised as a secular Jew. At twenty, he won a gold medal from a Munich art competition for Shylock and Jessica, showing a scene from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. He painted the face for Jessica based on a woman, Laura Rosenfeld, whom he had proposed marriage to. However, Rosenfeld rejected his proposal, and wed a Berlin banker. It is believed that he then committed suicide by exposure to the elements, dying of complications from a cold. Despite the early age of his death, more than three hundred of his works survive, though not all are finished. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, many Polish collections unknown in the West were discovered, and his reputation grew greatly. His brother, painter Leopold Gottlieb, was born five years after his death.
