      Jean-Yves Gosti (French, b. 1960). Signed "Gosti '96" on lower verso. A striking sculpture of an abstract standing figure rendered in iron by French artist Jean-Yves Gosti. The figure stands with both feet turned toward his right, one arm resting across his waist, and the other reaching up toward his chin, as if making a thinking gesture - his expressive visage comprised of offset openwork circular eyes flanking a crooked nose, and an open mouth revealing the tongue. Gosti's style may be described as Brutalist, as the oxidized iron surfaces connote an somewhat 'brut' (French for 'raw') state. At the same time, Gosti renders the figure in an intriguing distorted manner that conveys an emotional effect, akin to that of the Expressionists. The figure is attached to a square base with unconventional cylindrical feet and stands before an elegantly curved backdrop. Size: 8" L x 8" W x 34.375" H (20.3 cm x 20.3 cm x 87.3 cm); 36.875" H (93.7 cm) on included custom stand.
