          Philip Gosse (1810-1888) UK, Archival Print. Depicts a parasitic anemone. Calliactis parasitica is a species of sea anemone associated with hermit crabs. It lives in the eastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea at depths between the intertidal zone and 60 m (200 ft). It is up to 10 cm × 8 cm (3.9 in × 3.1 in) in size, with up to 700 tentacles, and is very variable in colour. Size: 19 x 13 in. Réunion du volume de texte de Gosse, paru en 1847, et du volume de planches destinées à l'illustrer paru deux ans plus tard. L'intention originelle avait été de représenter chaque espèce décrite dans le texte, mais l'Avertissement au début du volume de planches précise que, dans la mesure où un certain nombre de ces espèces ont déjà été représentées avec succès dans d'autres ouvrages à la portée du grand public, celui-ci se concentrera, en 52 planches, sur des espèces nouvelles ou plus rares. La numérotation des planches ayant cependant déjà été exécutée, celle-ci n'est pas continue. Ces deux volumes sont généralement considérés par les bibliographies (à l'exception de Nissen) comme deux ouvrages séparés, alors que les légendes des planches font explicitement référence aux pages du premier volume.
