John Gossage (b.1946) John Gossage (b.1946) THE POND, 1985. First Edition, hardback, blue cloth covers with silver gelatin print tipped-in to upper cover, with dust jacket, 49 full-page black and white photographs, essay by Denise Sines. New York: Aperture, 1985. A scarce first edition of American photographer John Gossage's first book, The Pond was included in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's second volume of the The Photobook: A History: "The Pond would seem to refer back to several important precedents, both literary and photographic, though more obliquely than directly. Firstly, the title reflects ironically upon Henry David Thoreau's back-to-nature classic novel, Walden (1854),and its famous pond. As Dan Meinwald has said: 'If Thoreau declared that living properly was an art, and that man could only live properly in nature, Gossage is declaring that man cannot live properly in nature.'" Literature: Parr & Badger, The Photobook Vol.II, pp.36-37.
