  • E. Gorokhovsky (1929-2004), Watercolour ‘House of Cards’, 1992
    Jul. 22, 2015

    E. Gorokhovsky (1929-2004), Watercolour ‘House of Cards’, 1992

    Est: €1,700 - €2,210

Watercolour ink and silkscreen on paper Germany, 1992 Gorokhovsky Edward (1929-2004) – one of the most important painters of the Moscow conceptualist movement Signed and dated lower right ‘Gorokhovsky 92’ Dimensions: 66.8 x 95.5 cm Very good condition Provenance: from a private collection in Berlin (acquired at ARCO Madrid in 2002) An exceptionally fine work on paper by one of Russia’s most important conceptualists, in which photography and painting conflate; similar works fetch up to 16,000 Euros at international auctions This fine drawing by Edward Gorokhovsky titled ‘House of Cards’ was created in 1992 and is part of the artist’s later work. Screen prints of photographs – portraits of the 19th Century used as the court card images – have been inserted into a dream-like world of grey watercolour clouds and geometrical hatching patterns. Nude female bodies and angelic figures are hovering in the background, drawn with the finest of pen strokes. Gorokhovsky sees himself as a craftsman, who builds his paintings like sculptures, adding layer upon layer. In Gorokhovsky’s oeuvre photography is always the framework, which determines his images and is supplemented and reworked by painterly means such as watercolour, ink or gouache. Thus, abstracted universes emerge in which the photographed lead an almost ghostly existence. The representation is loaded with symbolism and can partly be understood as a metaphor for the loss of individuality within the Soviet regime. The drawing is in very good condition with only minor creases. There are traces of adhesive on the back from previous mounting and minimal foxing. The work is signed in Cyrillic and dated lower right ‘Gorokhovsky 92’, the reverse is inscribed in Cyrillic lower left, signed lower right, titled and dated as well as annotated by an unknown hand. The sheet measures 66.8 x 95.5 cm. Gorokhovsky Eduard (1929-2004) Gorokhovsky Edward was born in 1929 in Vinnitsa, Ukraine. In 1954 he graduated in architecture at the State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture in Odessa. A year later, he participated for the first time in an exhibition of the Artists’ Union of Novosibirsk. Gorokhovsky moved to Moscow in 1973 and has since exhibited regularly in Russia and abroad. From 1991 onwards, he lived and worked in Germany. Gorokhovsky is regarded as the founder of Russian photo-based art, he was one of the first Soviet artists to use photographic material as the basis of his paintings. Today his works are held at the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, the Museum Ludwig in Aachen, the Albertina in Vienna and many other important public collections. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Auctionata charges the resale rights tax pursuant to Section 26 of the German Copyright Act (UrhG) towards the buyer in case of the sale of an original work of art or photography prior to 70 years having lapsed since the death of their creator. You can find more information about resale rights tax in Auctionata´s table of fees and T&C.
