Rudolph Carl Gorman Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor, b. 1931 - d. 2005

Rudolph Carl Gorman (July 26, 1931 – November 3, 2005) was a Native American artist of the Navajo Nation. Referred to as "the Picasso of American Indian artists" by The New York Times, his paintings are primarily of Native American women and characterized by fluid forms and vibrant colors, though he also worked in sculpture, ceramics, and stone lithography. He was also an avid lover of cuisine, authoring four cookbooks, (with accompanying drawings) called Nudes and Food.

Rudolph Carl Gorman was born in Chinle, Arizona. His mother was Adele Katherine Brown and his father Carl Nelson Gorman. His father, Carl, was one of the original twenty-nine Navajo Code Talkers. He, with his colleagues, developed the unbreakable code American forces used in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Carl later studied at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles and was a technical illustrator for Douglas Aircraft. He also founded a silk-screen design company and taught Indian art at the University of California at Davis. [World War II].

R. C. Gorman grew up in a traditional Navajo hogan and began drawing at age 3. His grandmother helped raise him, recounting Navajo legends and enumerating his genealogy of artist ancestors. She kindled his desire to become an artist. While tending sheep in Canyon de Chelly with his aunts, he used to draw on the rocks, sand, and mud, and made sculptures with the clay, with his earliest subjects including Mickey Mouse and Shirley Temple.

He credited a teacher, Jenny Lind at Ganado Presbyterian Mission School, for his inspiration to become a full-time artist. After he left high school, he served in the United States Navy before entering college, where he majored in literature and minored in art at Northern Arizona University.

In 1958, he received the first scholarship from the Navajo Tribal Council to study outside of the United States, and enrolled in the art program at Mexico City College. There he learned of and was influenced by the work of Diego Rivera. He later studied art at San Francisco State University, where he also worked as a model.

    R.C. Gorman Lithograph - "Nizhoni" (1989)

    Est: $1,400 - $2,100

Rudolph Carl Gorman (Navajo, 1931-2005). "Nizhoni" color lithograph, 1989. Edition 42 of 224. Hand-signed and dated at lower left. Numbered at lower right. A pleasing lithograph by Navajo artist R. C. Gorman titled "Nizhoni" which translates to beautiful. Rendered in lovely hues of violet, lemon, and apricot, the piece portrays a Navajo woman in a long-sleeved blouse and flowing skirt seated beside a basket of gourds. The lady supports herself with one arm, while looking off, away from the viewer, her head turned slightly upward and her hair pulled back to highlight her elegant profile. Referred to as "the Picasso of American Indian artists" by the New York Times, Gorman was known primarily for his portrayals of Native American women done in his characteristic style of fluid forms and vibrant colors, as seen in this example. All is set behind glass in a custom matte and frame with a suspension wire on verso for display. Size of lithograph: 35.25" W x 27" H (89.5 cm x 68.6 cm); of frame: 46.125" W x 38.25" H (117.2 cm x 97.2 cm) About the artist: R.C. (Rudolph Carl) Gorman was born in Chinle, Arizona in 1931 to Adele Katherine Brown and Carl Nelson Gorman, who was a Navajo Code Talker during World War II. Gorman grew up listening to Diné (Navajo) legends and stories of his family history. When he was little, he would draw pictures in the dirt and on rocks while tending sheep. After high school, Gorman served in the United States Navy before attending Northern Arizona University where he studied literature and art. He continued to study and create art at Mexico City College and San Francisco State University. In 1968, Gorman opened the Navajo Gallery showcasing 55 artists. It was the first indigenous-owned fine art gallery in the United States. Gorman's artistic style was heavily influenced by his time in Mexico where he was introduced to stone lithography and the artistic approaches used by Diego Rivera and other Mexican social realist artists. He moved away from more European depictions and began painting strong Navajo women, in honor of those who raised him. Gorman's use of bold colors earned him the title 'Picasso of American Indian Art.' In addition to lithographs, Gorman worked with ceramics, oil pastels, serigraphs, woodcuts, and etchings. R.C. Gorman passed away in 2005."
