Morris Gordon, a leader in photography as a cameraman, a co‐director of the annual University of Miami Conference for Visual Communications and past president of the board of judges of World Press Photo in The Hague, died Saturday night of a heart attack in University Hospital. He was 63 years old and lived at 25 East 83d Street. In 1969 Mr. Gordon had retired after 18 years as director of photography for the Western Electric corporation. A native New Yorker, he got his start as a news photographer on the old New York Graphic, later joining the local staff of The Associated Press. He was one of the first photographers on the staff of the newspaper PM. He was also a former vice president of the New York Press Photographers Association. Mr. Gordon pioneered among industrial photographers in using the 35‐millimeter camera, which capitalizes on available rather than artificial lighting. He contributed to George B. Wright's “Available Light and Your Camera,” published in 1956. Mr. Gordon was a former chairman of the annual advanced seminar in photojournalism for professionals, given at Kent State University. With the late Wilson Hicks, a former executive editor of Life, he was co‐chairman of the annual photojournalism conference at the University of Miami sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Photographers, of which he was president in 1960-61. Mr. Gordon's own pictures have been widely exhibited, and recently he received both the Interkamara Silver Medal for international understanding through photography and the photography award at the Venice Art Festival.
