Colorful abstract on board, prominently signed on front, and marked on back, 1942. From the same generation as the Group of Seven, Hortense Gordon broke away from the traditional style of her peers and became a trailblazer for modern abstract painting in Canada. Gordon painted landscape and still life compositions in her early years and transitioned into a non-representational style as a result of her travels to New York and Europe. Following her husbands death in 1940, Gordon enrolled in German artist Hans Hofmanns School of Art, in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Hofmanns teachings can be seen in Gordons work from this period as she began to refine the shapes, color and spatial composition of her paintings. Overall Size: 17 x 15 in. These forms - with their hints of turquoise and red - form blossoming cacti and oil rigs, the bones of oxen, an oasis in the imagination, and under the heat of the sun. Here, Gordon captures the sentiment that Iris Nowell expresses: Abstract art is "infinitely more than mere shapes and colours... (It) is an amalgam of energy, power and rhythm, the components that fire this art's ineffable energy." Abandoned in an uninhabited landscape, the artist conveys a distinct sense of fortitude and freedom.

Returning to Canada, Gordon's interest in the crafts grew exponentially and she began working in her own studio with a kiln, teaching classes on china painting and pottery making. Relocating back to Hamilton in 1918 for a higher paying teaching position, Gordon created a ceramics course at the Hamilton Technical and Art School. As Iris Nowell points out, Gordon believed in making art that could be enjoyed by all: "She tried to uphold William Morris's commitment to bringing the highest standard of beauty into daily life..." It was her interest in function and art that lead to "Design for Wallpaper", a product of her two passions, painting and craftwork. The work was most likely done before the 1940s when Gordon's interest in Abstract Expressionism had gained momentum and she began to study under Hans Hofmann at his school in Provincetown, Massachusetts. After Gordon's death in 1963, Hans Hofmann stated: "Hortense Gordon was indeed an extraordinary person; always directed toward the future and progress in life and art, and determined to do her very best in her work...and the results and consequences have been remarkable and beautiful."

While there are traces of architectural forms still evident, her direction has clearly progressed to the abstract. The style and quality of this work likely influenced her close friend Ray Mead to invite Gordon into the group Painters Eleven, founded later this same year. This work has been exhibited in Hamilton, Montreal and as far afield as Provincetown, USA. Gordon spent many summers in Provincetown and exhibited with the Provincetown Art Association frequently. She became acquainted with the area while studying at the school of Hans Hofmann and later, exhibiting alongside contemporaries like William Ronald. Gordon was one of the first Canadian artists to learn from Hofmann. As Stuart MacCuaig relates, she was captivated by "his theories of positive and negative areas in painting, of suspension and movement, and of push and pull." Her use of shape and colour manifests this tension, generating a visual energy in this important Painters Eleven period work by the artist.

Note: Dynamic, lucid essays, which combine abstraction and cubism, are typical of the work from 1949 (the year of Cubist Abstraction) by the resourceful and important Painters Eleven member Hortense Gordon. However, Cubist Abstraction is of an unusually large size and brightness of colour in her oeuvre of this moment, perhaps because she created this painting as a commission (The verso of the painting features a label, likely created by her niece Reva Colerick, who handled Gordon's estate, which reads "order from Ben's Restaurant, Montreal"). As with much of Gordon's work, the effect is at once lyrical and filled with rhythmic energy. Recognizable objects here maintain their identities when Gordon strips them of their original contexts by detailing their shapes and arranging them by form. Inevitably, suggestive associations emerge. Gordon likely received the Ben's Restaurant commission on one of the many visits she made to Montreal as she developed a warm working relationship with Gallery dealer Agnes Lefort. In November 1953, an important one-person show of Gordon's work travelled to Galerie Agnes Lefort, after it had opened the previous February at the Creative Gallery in New York and had been exhibited widely at public galleries in both the United States and Canada. The opening of the show in Montreal coincided with a meeting of the Royal Canadian Academy and would have served as something of an object lesson for that group of an artist who could use abstraction and related insights to illuminating effect.
