Through his bravura painting techniques, Goossens not only represents the scene, but also evokes the carefree attitude of Munich's social life around 1911. The present painting Fünfuhrthee exemplifies the zeitgeist by depicting this bustling café in the late afternoon.

In der Sonne -- Öl auf Leinwand. Um 1910. -- 44 x 53 cm. -- Unten rechts mit Pinsel in Grau signiert "Josse Goossens", auf der Rahmenrückseite (von fremder Hand?) betitelt. -- -- Flirrendes Laub und leuchtende Blüten umgeben die beiden im Garten sitzenden Damen, deren Figuren sich harmonisch in die natürliche Szenerie einfügen. Die charakteristische Alltagsszene Goossens' ist in lockerem, impressionistischem Duktus und mit einer harmonischen, lebendigen Farbgebung gestaltet. Mit Hilfe des pastosen Farbauftrags modelliert der Künstler das Blattwerk in seiner plastischen Wirkung effektvoll durch. Goossens studierte in den 1890er Jahren an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, unter anderem bei Arthur Kampf. Um 1905 fand er zu seinem impressionistischen Stil. Bald schon zeichnete sich Goossens Werk durch zunehmend leuchtende Farben aus. Besonders in den Jahren vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg dominierte vorübergehend eine freiere Formwahl, die seinen Gemälden eine besondere Lebendigkeit verleiht. -- Wir danken Georg Roebling, Brüssel, für die Bestätigung der Authentizität des vorliegenden Gemäldes. Josse Goossens, Portrait of a Child (Study for the Fresco "Let the Little Children Come to Me")

Signed lower right: Josse Goossens Framed under glass Inscribed in the lower margin: "Studie zu einem Wandbild in der Aula des Königl. Gymnasium zu Moers / N.Rh. / (Lasset die Kindlein zu mir kommen-)". The large fresco in the assembly hall of the grammar school at Moers, for which our portrait of a child looking up is a study, was completed by Josse Goossens in 1902 at the age of 26 after he had won the competition for this decorative commission. While Goossens was initially committed to the academic style of the Düsseldorf School of painting, he later turned to more modern plein air style with a brighter, luminous colour palette.
