ARTIST: George Turland Goosey (California, New York, United Kingdom, 1877 - 1947) TITLE: Landscape - Jersey (titled on verso) MEDIUM: oil on paper. Paper applied to board. CONDITION: Some scratches/paint losses. Some damages to left and lower edges. No visible inpaint under UV light. ART SIZE: 12 x 16 inches / 30 x 40 cm FRAME SIZE: unframed (In-House framing available) SIGNATURE: lower left ATTENTION: This lot is located at our Mamaroneck, NY office. CATEGORY: old antique vintage painting for auction sale online AD: ART WANTED: Consign, Trade In, Cash Offer SKU#: 132304 US SHIPPING: $60 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: The son of Nathaniel S. Turland of Northampton, England, George Turland Goosey made a name for himself initially as an architect in America using the surname Turland Goosey. He designed some of the early skyscrapers, "the famous Friars Club, the theatrical centre of America's capital", and no less than seven Roman Catholic churches. He was also an accomplished etcher - his print Moonlight on a Venetian Canal winning first prize in the annual exhibition in New York in 1914.In 1921, however, he decided to try his hand at painting and returned to England, where he settled in the art colony at St Ives, Cornwall. In addition to continuing his etching, he developed an impressionistic style in oils, and his paintings of boats in St Ives harbour have won many admirers. Confusingly for collectors, however, by the late 1920s, he had reverted to using his original surname of Turland. He rarely practised as an architect whilst in St Ives - his highly regarded design for the cross on the War Memorial being an exception - but his change of status did not bother him at all:"He lives in a little studio perched on the rocks, where he paints and draws in black and white, so close to the sea that in the winter-time the foam dashes against the walls of his home... There he is, whiling the hours away, just doing the things that he likes best - and happy. He and Rolf Bennett, the author, sit at the window, listening to the cries of the gulls and the music of the waves, smoking Dustman's Delight, a mixture of their own concoction." (Vera Hemmens "A Cornish Chelsea" - St Ives Times, August 1923).Goosey played an active role in the theatricals at the St Ives Arts Club and joined the St Ives Society of Artists in the late 1920s. As the Second World War loomed, he returned to America, settling in Laguna Beach, California and becoming a member of the Laguna Beach Art Association.

George Turland (1877-1947) Kobe Japan, 1936. Signed  LL. Oil on masonite. 12" x 16". Framed size 17-1/2" x 21-1/2" The son of Nathaniel S Turland of Northampton, George had adopted the name Turland Goosey by the time he arrived in St Ives, although he reverted to the name George Turland in the late 1920s. Trained as an architect, he had gone to America and made a name for himself designing some of the early skyscrapers and no less than seven Roman Catholic churches. Having already had success showing his etchings, his purpose in moving to St Ives in 1921 was to try his hand at painting. Although rarely practicing as an architect whilst in the town, his highly regarded design for the cross on the War Memorial was an exception. In the 1924 Show Day at St Ives, his principal picture was of Venice with old Adriatic boats anchored against the wall of a Doge's palace. Another was a view of the Rialto Curio shop at the foot of the Rialto bridge, and a smaller depiction of the Grand Canal. An array of other works included oils of The Island, Clodgy; Godrevy and the Bay from Knill Moor. George played an active role in the theatricals at the St Ives Arts Club, and was invited to join STISA in 1928. He returned to America as war loomed in the late 1930s and settled at Laguna Beach, California, where he developed an impressionistic style of depicting boats in the harbour, winning many admirers.

George Turland - Grand Canyon.  Oil on panel, 12" x 16". Framed size 17-5/8" x 21-1/2" The son of Nathaniel S Turland of Northampton, George had adopted the name Turland Goosey by the time he arrived in St Ives, although he reverted to the name George Turland in the late 1920s.
