Albert Goodwin, RWS,  British 1845-1932-  Figures in an Alpine landscape;  mixed media on paper, signed 'Albert Goodwin' (lower right), inscribed 'Under the Flitchorn [sic.] / Simplon' (lower left), 26.7 x 36.7 cm. (unframed).  Provenance:  Private Collection.  Note:  Goodwin was a prominent landscape painter who worked principally in watercolours. He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite approach of Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893) and Arthur Hughes (1832-1915), under whom he studied. As well as producing a number of watercolours during his extensive travels, he was heavily inspired by the British landscape and returned to the subject repeatedly. Goodwin's paintings reveal the undeniable influence of J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), particularly in the artist's confident use of colour and light to produce works which are strikingly atmospheric.  Goodwin produced a number of Alpine views, such as his depiction of the Jungfrau which sold at Duke's, Dorset, on 11 July 2024 (lot 109) for £900, and of the Rigi which sold at Christie's, London, on 10 June 2020 (lot 1), also for £900.

Albert Goodwin, RWS - Palace Pier, Brighton

          Est: £400 - £600

Albert Goodwin, RWS,  British 1845-1932 Palace Pier, Brighton;  pencil and watercolour on paper, signed 'Albert Goodwin' (lower right), inscribed and dated 'Palace Pier / Brighton  / 26.VI.04' (lower left), 12.1 x 16 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Goodwin was a prominent landscape artist who worked principally in watercolours. He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite approach of Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893) and Arthur Hughes (1832-1915), under whom he studied. As well as producing a number of watercolours during his extensive travels, he was also heavily inspired by the British landscape. Goodwin's paintings reveal the undeniable influence of J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), particularly in the artist's confident, atmospheric use of colour and light.

          Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Albert Goodwin (1845 - 1932) Oil on board, Signed Lower Left, Measures (6 x 11 inches) w/frame (9 x 13 inches) Albert Goodwin was born in Maidstone, England in 1845, just three years before the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded, and two years after the publication of Ruskin's first volume of Modern Painters. These dates are significant because it was in the artistic circles generated by Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites that Goodwin developed as an artist - first in the studio of Arthur Hughes, then under the supervision of F M Brown, and finally as a protégé of Ruskin. Although the Pre-Raphaelites were not primarily landscape painters, their views on 'truth to nature', and their practice of working directly from nature for the landscape settings of their pictures, inevitably influenced most contemporary landscape painters in the 1850s and 1860s; and in his Notes on Prout and Hunt, Ruskin quite rightly described Goodwin's work as having been 'founded first on strong Pre-Raphaelite veracities…'. Goodwin was, in fact, extremely fortunate in being taught by Brown,
