This body of work, with its Pop Art sensibilities, provided a means by which Goodwin could, “…cleanse her art of past practices – to reinvent it. In doing so, she found that essential connection between herself and her art.” Vest Fragment One (1972) is a print produced near the end of the “Vest” series as Goodwin’s interests were pulling her in yet another new direction.Estimate: $3,000–5,000

Personally, it was special in another way for Goodwin…the shirt represented belonged to her son. Estimate: $4,000–6,000

BETTY GOODWIN, UNTITLED, 2000, signed and dated, 12" x 11" - 30 x 27.5 cm.Provenance: Private Collection, Toronto.Note: Renowned for her tender and often mournful drawings, prints, and installations, Betty Goodwin burst onto the arts scene with the seminal Vest One (1969), the first of her series of etchings of clothing and an exemplar of her transformational use of everyday objects. Later series in drawing, photo etching, and mixed media, particularly The Swimmers (1975-85), La mémoire du corps (1990-95) and the Nerve series (1994), consolidated her reputation as an iconic artist of the human body. In 1986, Goodwin was the first English-speaking Quebec artist to win the province's Prix Paul-Emile Borduas, one of its highest arts distinctions. She was chosen to represent Canada at the Venice Biennale in 1995 and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2003, the same year that she won the Governor General's Award for Visual Arts and the National Gallery of Canada mounted a major career retrospective. By the time Goodwin died in Montreal in 2008, she was recognized as one of Canada's pre-eminent artists. Her works have been exhibited in Canada and internationally and are featured in many private and public collections, notably that of the Art Gallery of Ontario, to which she donated more than 150 pieces.

Elegant and profound, Goodwin's work presents us with what initially seems like a simple form, then compels us to hold our gaze and question the subtlety of what we see. As with the work of many great sculptors, The Tearing of a Voice is rooted in Goodwin's drawings of the human form, and suggests the inanimate objects - vests, chairs and shelves - that she was able to depict as though they were inhabited by warm bodies, whether fully realized or intuited by the viewer. In referring to the materials she incorporated in her sculpture, Goodwin said, "The universe we live in is made up of some very powerful forces and magnetism is one of them.....In French, magnets are called aimants which is very close to amants, lovers, in other words two clinging things. I am using these magnets with steel filings.....they could easily be conceived of as little tufts of hair."

Having experimented on a small etching press she acquired in 1954, her blossoming in that medium was assisted by Gunter Nolte and Yves Gaucher. This fine example of Goodwin's etching technique is supported by the fluid yet intimate drawing skills that ".....most effectively enabled Betty Goodwin to extract from the tragic turbulence of existence the fragments of meaning she consented to share with us."
