JOHN CHARLES GOODHART (AUSTRALIAN 1873-1952) DUST STORM OVER BROKEN HILL, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA signed and dated J.C. Goodhart 1907 lower left oil on canvas 61.5 x 85cm; 24 1/4 x 33 1/2in 86 x 109.5cm; 34 x 43 1/4in (framed) The present work captures the legendary dust storm that engulfed Broken Hill and the surrounding area of New South Wales in 1907. Trees were uprooted and roofs were ripped off homes by the strong winds that blew dust as far as the sea. The region is still subject to devastating natural disasters, with the last dust storm accumulating as recently as 2021. Broken Hill is a city in the far west region of outback New South Wales, Australia. The town features in Australia's history after the discovery of silver-lead-zinc ore established Broken Hill as a prosperous mining town.
