A fine redware jar of globular form, enveloped in red slip and hand-polised to a lustrous burnish. The exterior is deeply carved with alternating geometric designs. This piece was created by Rose Gonzeles (1900-1989) who was originally from the Ohkay Owingeh (San Juan) Pueblo but married into the San Ildefonso Pueblo and learned how to make polished blackware pottery from her mother-in-law Ramona Sanchez Gonzales (1885-1980) in the 1920s. Rose is known for innovating of deep carved pottery in approximately 1930 at San Ildefonso. San Ildefonso is best known as the home of famous potter Maria Martinez (1887-1980), whose creations are valued by collectors worldwide.       Rose Gonzales (1900-1989) San Ildefonso Carved Blackware Pottery Bowl. This bowl is one of her classic shapes and designs. There are alternating traditional step design clouds and rounded clouds. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Rose”. Rose is often considered the first at San Ildefonso Pueblo to make carved pottery. She was originally from San Juan Pueblo and married Robert Gonzales in 1920. Her carved pottery was a cameo in appearance as it is not deep and ends on the sharp edge of her pottery. She was the mother of Tse-Pe Gonzales and taught him and his wife, Dora Tse-Pe to make pottery. She was also the great-aunt of Russell Sanchez and taught him to make pottery.       Rose Gonzales (1900-1989), a very rare San Ildefonso Pueblo Incised Blackware Pottery Plate of traditional form, decorated with a deeply incised avanyu ("water serpent") band, signed on the underside "Rose", circa 1970. Certificate of Authenticity, Chief Osceola of Seminole Tribe. Measurements 12(in) x 12(in) x 2(in). Rose Cata Gonzales, a native of San Juan Pueblo, was orphaned at an early age when her parents died in an influenza epidemic. She lived with a relative, Mary Cata, until 1920 when she married Robert Gonzales and moved to his native San Ildefonso Pueblo. There she was taught the craft of pottery by her mother-in-law Ramona Sanchez Gonzales. Her pots are characterized by their traditional motifs and her innovative incised designs. By the 1970's she was revered as one of the great Pueblo potters, and her tradition was continued by her son Johnny Tse-Pe/Gonzales, daughter-in-law Dora and granddaughter Irene.
