HELIOS GÓMEZ RODRÍGUEZ (Seville, 1905 - Barcelona, 1956). "Guitarist". Gouache on paper. Signed in the lower right corner. It presents slight damage in the lower area. Measurements: 50 x 34 cm; 73 x 57 cm (frame). Gypsy painter and poet, framed within the artistic avant-garde of the beginning of the 20th century, Helios Gómez was known as "the artist with the red tie", and was an anti-Francoist trade unionist, as well as a painter, poster artist and poet. He trained at the Industrial School of Arts and Crafts in Seville and in the evening courses of the School of Fine Arts, and began his career as a ceramics decorator at the Cartuja. In 1923 he joined the CNT and published his first works in the anarchist newspaper "Páginas libres". Two years later he exhibited cubist works for the first time in the Kursaal café. An active participant in the uprisings of the time, he was forced to go into exile in Paris in 1927. From there he went to Brussels, Amsterdam and Vienna, and finally spent two months in the USSR. In 1929 he extended his studies in Berlin, where he published his first album "Días de Ira". When the Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed, he returned to Spain, still very active in the political struggle. Once again imprisoned and later exiled, in 1933 he exhibited at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, while continuing to publish his works outside Spain. In 1935 he was in Barcelona, where he was appointed president of the cartoonists' union the following year. During the Civil War he was active on various fronts and resumed his former anarchist militancy, and after the war he spent some time in concentration camps in France. On his return to Spain, he was imprisoned although he continued to work until his death in Barcelona.
