Goltzius, Julius (±1550-after 1595). (God appearing to Abraham). Engraving after Pieter VAN DER BORCHT (or Hans BOL?), 11,6x16,5 cm., monogrammed "I.G. fc". "P. van der Borcht invent." and w. the address of "J. Janss. excud." (J. Janssonius), numb. "1" in the plate. - With wide, ample margins. = Rare, this print not traced. Not in New Hollstein (Van der Borcht or Bol). Hollstein (Julius Goltzius), lists 8 prints after Bol with landscapes with scenes from the Old and New Testament, divided in two series, each numbered 1 to 4 and published by Janssonius (Hollstein 1-8). Not specified by Hollstein which scenes and without images. New Hollstein (Bol) lists those 8 prints as no.11-14, together with the 4 prints (rejected as Bol) R22-25. Those last 4 prints are numbered 1 to 4, so they are probably the same as the 4 (of 8) as described in Hollstein (Julius Goltzius). However, the engravings in New Hollstein, Bol 11-14, are only partly numbered in the edition by Janssonius (with NH 15 numbered "5"!). So it is not certain if these 4 are part of the 8 listed under Julius Goltzius. There is an engraving in the Rijksmuseum by Goltzius after Bol: Abraham kneeling for the three angels, numbered "2"(according to the museum, Hollstein (Julius Goltzius) 2). This print is for some reason omitted from the New Hollstein (Bol). Although the name of van der Borcht is on our print, the style is very similar to the print in the Rijksmuseum and the 8 prints in the New Hollstein (11-14 and Rejected prints 22-25). So they are probably all by the same artist and part of an (unfinished?) series of biblical scenes. Cf. New Hollstein (Hans Bol) 11-14 and Hollstein (Julius Goltzius) 1-8.

Ein Soldat nimmt Abschied von seiner Frau. -- Kupferstich 16,2 x 27,6 cm. Um 1560. Hollstein 49. Wz. Gotisches P. -- -- Julius Goltzius war der Sohn von Hubert Goltzius, Numismatiker und Drucker. Er gravierte etwa nach Maarten de Vos und wirkte in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts auch als Verleger in Brügge und Antwerpen. Vorliegende Darstellung ist das erste Blatt einer vierteiligen Folge "Wortspiele zum Verhältnis zwischen Mann und Frau". Die Frau beschwert sich im mittig angebrachten Text, dass der Mann sofort wieder seinen Soldaten dienen muss, sobald er die Sturmglocke läuten hört. Der Wettstreit zwischen den Geschlechtern ist in den Niederlanden bereits seit dem 15. Jahrhundert ein beliebtes Thema der bildenden Künste. -- Prachtvoller, präziser Druck mit sehr zarten Wischspuren, an die äußerste Einfassung geschnitten. Minimal stockfleckig sowie geringfügig fleckig, mittig schwache ausgebesserte Läsur, verso leichte Mittelfalte und minimal knitterspurig, auf ein Fensterpassepartout montiert, sonst sehr schönes Exemplar. Traduzioni nello stesso verso dagli originali dell'analoga serie incisa da Julius Goltzius e pubblicata da Johannes Baptista Vrints (attivo ad Anversa 1575-1610 ca.). Bellissime prove di grande freschezza stampate su carta vergellata priva di filigrana. Al verso di una delle tavole nota a matita che avanza il nome di Charles David, incisore attivo a Parigi tra il 1600 ed il 1636. (4)

Goltzius, Julius: Allegorie auf die Künste

Honos alit artes - Ehre nährt die Künste. Kupferstich. "Lambertus Scheckelius Dusiluius inuen. 18 Jul. 1588. "Julius Goltzius sculpsit. AHy excud.". Nicht bei Hollstein, wohl unbeschrieben. Komplexe Allegorie auf die Künste und die Wissenschaften, protegiert durch den Papst, den Kaiser und verschiedene Könige des Heiligen Römischen Reiches. Das Wappen zeigt die Insignien von Papst Clemens VIII. Aldobrandini. Julius Goltzius war seit 1577 für die Plantinische Offizin in Antwerpen tätig. Für gewöhnlich wurden seine Radierungen von Jean-Baptiste Vrints verlegt. Vorliegender Kupferstich wurde jedoch offenkundig laut der angebrachten Verlegeradresse "AHy excud" von Adrian Huybrechts herausgegeben. - Prachtvoller, prägnanter Druck des äußerst seltenen Blattes, partiell mit Spuren einer Einfassungslinie, sonst die Darstellung minimal knapp angeschnitten. Minimal fleckig, verso schwache geglättete Knick- und Faltspuren, zwei kaum wahrnehmbare Quetschspuren vom Druck, winzige Ausbesserungen in den Eckspitzen, in der rechten Ecke kleine, unauffällig angesetzte Stelle, sonst in guter Erhaltung. Von großer Seltenheit, wir konnten kein Exemplar in den letzten 20 Jahren nachweisen.
