Alexander Goltz (Austria,1857-1944) oil painting antique

ARTIST: Alexander Demetrius Goltz (Austrian, 1857 - 1944) NAME: Landscape with Figures YEAR: 1894 MEDIUM: oil on board CONDITION: Very good. No visible inpaint under UV light. SIGHT SIZE: 23 x 18 inches / 58 x 45 cm FRAME SIZE: 29 x 24 inches / 73 x 60 cm SIGNATURE: lower right CATEGORY: antique vintage painting AD: ART CONSIGNMENTS WANTED. CONTACT US SKU#: 121306 US Shipping $75 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: Alexander Demetrius Goltz was born near Debrecen in Hungary in 1857 and grew up in Vienna. He studied painting in Munich before attending Vienna's Academy of Fine Arts under Feuerbach. Subsequently, he undertook extensive study trips through Europe, the Orient and America. From 1904 to 1907, Goltz was the head of the decoration department at the Court Theatre, and, two years later, he held the same post at the Imperial and Royal Court Opera Theatre. He also designed the National Theatre in Zagreb and the Jassy Theatre in Romania. In 1913, he created a ceiling painting for the Imperial Palace which depicts the encounter between Emperor Maximilian and Mary of Burgundy. Before this, however, Goltz had numbered among the finalists for another ceiling painting in the Palace, planned for the Maria Theresa Hall. Expert commentators at the time thought his design was stunning, but he took too much liberty with it for a work that was to be so tightly connected to the state. It was to be a stroke of luck for Goltz, for the Maria Theresa Hall was never to be completed, and his victorious competitor lost out in monetary terms.

On the beach at Wachau, 1932

      Est: €2,400 - €3,000

11,7 x 17,5 in Verso labelled A.D. Goltz, "Am Badestrand (Wachau) I" The 60 years in which Alexander Demetrius Goltz was working as an artist were years of profound development for art history as a whole. Thus many of his historical pieces are still attributed to the 19th century. Yet from 1900 to 1911 Goltz was part of the Hagenbund and radically changed his style of painting to one of modern impressionism. The present object piece is to be attributed to his later works and exemplifies his wide ranging ductus with a spontaneously captured scene from a beach in the Wachau.

ALEXANDER DEMETRIUS GOLTZ (1857-1944), OIL ON CANVAS ‘VIEW OF A VILLAGE’, 1909

      Est: €500 - €1,000

Alexander Demetrius Goltz (1857-1944) Oil on canvas Austria, 1909 This oil painting by the Austrian artist Alexander Demetrius (1857-1944) is reminiscent of Impressionist works and shows an impasto use of paint. Thin trees before a lively sky make up the foreground, with a village on the horizon. Alexander Demetrius Goltz (also Alexander Demeter Goltz) was an Austrian painter and set designer. He grew up in Vienna from 1859 as the son of a train engineer. In 1874 and 1875 he studied painting under Otto Seitz at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. Between 1875 and 1988 Goltz was a student of Anselm Feuerbach at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. In 1876 he first exhibited female portraits. He became a member of the Wiener Künstlerhaus in 1880. Subsequently, he undertook extensive study trips, lived in Munich from 1884 to 1888, studied in Paris under Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and settled in Vienna in 1892. He first focused on figural paintings with a historical background, later landscapes and portraits. Alexander Demetrius Goltz, who was part of the Hagenbund between 1900 and 1911, was its president from 1906 to 1907. Later, his artistic focus shifted to set design and Goltz was head of scenery and costumes at the Hofburgtheater from 1904 to 1907 and the Hofoper from 1909 to 1910. During the First World War, Goltz was a war painter in the Imperial War Press Bureau and active in the Belgian, Russian, Italian, Serbian, Albanian and Turkish war zones. From 1925 to 1929 he was president of the Association of Fine Artists in Vienna. Alexander D. Goltz (1857-1944), Painting 'Tullnerfeld', 1920

      Est: €1,600 - €2,000

Oil on canvas Austria, around 1920 Alexander Demetrius Goltz (1857-1944) - Austrian painter and stage designer Lower right intertwined monogram 'GAD' Reverse on a label titled 'Tullnerfeld' Label with a Vienna Künstlerhaus exhibition numbering, dating to 1920, on the stretcher Overall dimensions, framed: 68.5 x 88.5 cm; stretcher frame: 61 x 80 cm Very good condition Provenance: Austrian private collection In recent years, the paintings by Goltz, a pupil of Otto Seitz, Anselm Feuerbach and Puvis de Chavannes, fetch rising prices on the market; the auction record for one of his works is more than 29,000 Euro This view of the 'Tullnerfeld', created around 1920, belongs to Alexander Demetrius Goltz's (1857-1944) Vienna period. From 1892 onwards, the artist permanently lived in the Austrian capital. As a pupil of the renowned artists Otto Seitz, Anselm Feuerbach and Puvis de Chavannes, Goltz's art shows influences of the Romantic, Impressionist and Symbolist movements. The painter has displayed the beautiful, lush green landscape with the flowing river in an atmospheric evening light. The brushwork, mostly spotted and dashed, in the area of the sky highly dynamic, clearly reflects the Impressionist canon of forms. However, the choice of colours and the planar painting also suggest an Art Nouveau approach. Lower right, the painting shows the artist's intertwined monogram 'GAD'. Reverse on a label is the handwritten title 'Tullnerfeld'. A label on the stretcher frame features an exhibition number of the Viennese Künstlerhaus. The painting is in very good condition, displaying only minimal signs of use. Under UV-light the signature and some strokes along the lower margin glow; most certainly a result of partial cleaning. The magnificent gold coloured ornamental frame is also in very good condition, showing only minor notches. The overall dimensions with frame are 68.5 x 88.5 cm, the stretcher frame measuring 61 x 80 cm. Alexander Demetrius Goltz (1857-1944) The Hungarian-born painter and stage designer Alexander Demetrius Goltz studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Otto Seitz, and subsequently with Anselm Feuerbach at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. From 1880 onwards, he was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. He undertook numerous study trips and lived in Munich from 1884 to 1888. Then, he studied with Pierre Puvis de Chavannes in Paris and settled in Vienna in 1892. Goltz's favourite motifs were figural paintings, landscapes and portraits. He portrayed numerous personalities from the arts and politics. From 1904 onwards, he was mainly active as a set designer in Vienna. From 1900 to 1911, the artist was a member of the Vienna Hagenbund. During the First World War, he devoted himself to war depictions. Today, works by Alexander Goltz are displayed, among others, in the Museum of Military History in Vienna.
