We wish to thank Gary L. Temple of The Meadowlark Gallery for confirming the authenticity of this painting. In a letter dated February 19, 2023, Mr. Temple discusses the present lot: " Watering Hole, Indian Village is an absolutely brilliant example of the painting skills of Elling William Gollings in 1919. At this point in his career, he had definitely excelled in composition and design. While newlyweds in the summer of 1919, Maude and Bill Gollings had a picnic where Bill did this painting. The wonderful use of the stream with the horses drinking and the Indian village in the background gains the proper perspective. Vivid summer foliage adds to the painting along with the lone Indian with the red blanket. This painting was a strong example of his skills as an artist in 1919. Gollings during his career was a very prolific artist and this painting was mentioned in his personal diary on June 3, 1920: 'Landscape, of creek on (the) Wrench ranch, fall scene made when M(aude) & I had a picnic last summer - price $25.00.'" Fascinated by Frederic Remington, Gollings drew from his life experiences to create paintings and drawings that depicted life in the Old West. As a young man, Gollings traveled to modest mining and ranching communities in Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Montana, working as a cowboy and a ranch hand. While ranching was a way to support himself, Gollings' interest in art ran deep. He began with a set of mail-order paints from Montgomery Ward, but developed his talent and later enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Art. Next, he moved to Wyoming, where he continued to pursue art and in time became proficient in etching. He built a studio in Sheridan, Wyoming in 1909, and focused on painting Western scenes, informed by a lifetime of first-hand experience. The following is an endearing account about how Gollings got his start, told by Gollings himself, "In the early spring 1903 I sent to Montgomery Ward & Company for some oil colors and other equipment to paint with. When the snow went off I made a low crude attempt at picture-making. The people on the ranch where I stayed and called home thought them wonderful. That summer I covered the mess tent with charcoal studies: horse heads and certain characters who interested and asked my brother to bring me over. I built a shack and called it a studio. The skylight in the roof gave me the right to call it such. Bill Gollings February 1923" (Bill Gollings: Cowboy Artist Paintings from the Sherry Nicholas Collection University of Wyoming Art Museum, 2007 Gallery/Study Guide) Gollings artworks have been collected by the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming, the Gilcrease Museum in Oklahoma, and the National Museum of Wildlife Art, in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, among other art institutions. William Gollings Bucking Bronco Student Painting

            Est: $3,000 - $5,000

This is an original work of art oil on canvas of a runaway stagecoach or wagon with bucking bronco at the center done by a student of William Gollings in the 20th Century. The piece is signed Gollings with his iconic “((A))” and below “Respectully by Monell”. The signature and ((A)) mark are nearly identical to Gollings signature and even in the same color and manner of Gollings lifetime works. Elling William (Bill) Gollings (American, 1878-1932) began painting in 1903 when he acquired some oil paints through the Montgomery Ward & Company catalog after being enthralled by the magazine illustrations by Frederic Remington. He was born in the rough and tumble mining camp of Pierce City, Idaho Territory in March of 1878. Like Frederic Remington, Gollings longed for a forgotten west, and went about authenticating himself to render it carefully and faithfully. This piece shows the same manner, style, pattern, subject matter and composition of an original Gollings even with a nearly identical Gollings signature but is thought to have been done by a student of Gollings, Monell. Not much is know known about Monell other than this amazing piece. Original Gollings works of this size and amazing scene regularly sell at live auction for in high excess of $150,000 to $612,000, with this being a much more affordable piece in the exact likeness of the originals. The piece is all hand painted and signed showing well preserved condition on a stretched canvas in oil with an original wood frame. The condition of this oil on canvas painting is good with no obvious signs of damage to the artwork the frame shows some wear to the edges and the left corner of the painting but otherwise in good overall condition. The measurements of this painting are 30 1/4" x 36 1/4" and the visible art measures 23 1/4" x 29 1/8".
