GOLLER, BRUNO 1901 Gummersbach - 1998 Düsseldorf Title: Schwarze Wolke. Date: 1964. Technique: Oil on canvas. Measurement: 120 x 100cm. Notation: Signed lower right: Bruno Goller. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Provenance: - Galerie Michael Werner, Cologne (label verso) - Galerie Setareh, Düsseldorf - Kasper König Collection, Berlin This work is registered under the number 6402 in the Bruno Goller Archive, Literature and Art Institute Hombroich. Bruno Goller is a German painter known for his unconventional and minimalist depictions of everyday life. His works are characterized by clear lines and a restrained colour palette. As a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, he influenced numerous generations of artists. The reserved painter Bruno Goller Goller, whose early work was largely destroyed when his studio was hit by a firebomb in 1943, is described as an introverted person. The artist, who rarely and unwillingly sold works, lived a reclusive life and rarely left his hometown of Düsseldorf. As he grew older, Goller increasingly followed a ritualized daily routine, the interruption of which also meant a break in his productivity. The artist saw modernism as an opportunity to develop and shape his own artistic language, free from all conventions. When looking at his oeuvre, it is remarkable that current issues relating to artistic discourse hardly feature in his works. They follow almost syntactical procedures and distance themselves from the arbitrariness of surrealism. Pictures as vessels The artist began to frame his paintings and drawings in black at an early stage. It seems as if Goller wanted to separate his works from the outside world, perhaps even protect them. His canvases look like vessels that Goller fills with themes that have meaning for him. These often have connections to his childhood. In many works there are references to ornamental wickerwork, which can presumably be traced back to his experiences in his mother's hat store. Schwarze Wolke (Black Cloud) This work from Königs' private collection is an example of how Goller creates an intimate insight into his private life with his reduced color palette and his own formal language. His typical ornaments, which do not follow any overarching structure, together with the characteristic borders, frame the scene of a dark cloud over a stylized forest. The strongly flattened pictorial space, which deprives the viewer of any possibility of spatial orientation, has an immersive effect and the style lends the work a rhythm that inevitably appeals to the viewer on an emotional level. Dec. 02, 2022

      Bruno Goller, Der Kleiderschrank, 1947

      Est: €35,000 - €40,000

Signed 'Bruno Goller' in brown lower right. With his quiet pictorial worlds removed from their everyday context and abstracted into timeless and secret symbols, Bruno Goller stood outside the artistic currents of his time. The Second World War marked a turning point for him. In the years following the war, he built on his earlier motifs, although he moved to a warmer chromatic mood with a predominantly brownish colour scheme. A formal idiom featuring a cubist rupturing of form became combined with inspiration derived from medieval manuscript painting, leading to an increased use of ornamental elements. In the mid 1950s the artist drew the attention of Werner Schmalenbach. The retrospective he presented at the Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hanover in 1958 was Goller’s first major solo exhibition and introduced him to a broad audience. In “Der Kleiderschrank” a wardrobe occupies the entire canvas to offer a glimpse into its inner life: this work is one of Goller’s best known and most frequently exhibited paintings from the post-war years and was also shown at the retrospective. Volker Kahmen writes: “The painting ‘Der Kleiderschrank’, 1947, is less medieval – only the folds of the drapery display echoes of this – but it is nonetheless enthralled with that ornamentalisation; incorporated into the objective context of the wardrobe’s moulding, the ornamental bands are heightened to the point of an almost physiognomic expression and become increasingly autonomous” (Kahmen, op. cit., p. 43). In addition to these vibrantly realised details of the furniture, it is the dominant diagonals of the drapery formed by the clothing which provide this still life with its unusual dynamism.

Bruno Goller, Ein Kreuz aus Jerusalem, 1987

Signed 'Bruno Goller' in black lower right. Verso dated '87' handwritten in red pen, numbered '18305' in pencil and with framing indication. Frame backing card with dedication from the artist to the former owner personally dated 1989 as well as additionally dated '87' in red pen. We would like to thank Ricarda Dick, Literatur- und Kunstinstitut Hombroich/Sammlung Kahmen, for kind information; the work is registered in the Goller-Archiv. While a religious, Christological theme surprisingly appears here in Goller's late work, in a painting that could function like an image for meditation symbolically pointing towards transcendence, other subtle layers of meaning are nonetheless inserted, produced through formal artistic aspects inherent to Goller's singular oeuvre as a whole. In this work, Goller seems to demonstrate conclusively and in a serious as well as playfull manner that if successful, his art and his artistic arrangement is hieratic, similar to an icon. In this case, the artist has literally appropriated and submitted himself to the magic of the sign of the cross. The approach of integrating letters and words into the compostion in such a way that they become a defining formal and thematic element and are to be read together with the visual elements is particularly remarkable. As in the case of a rebus, this is not a narrative illustration but an intellectually and formally abstract, open principle that is broken back down again when the content of the picture and the title of the picture are identically designated. Werner Schmalenbach has spoken about the importance of our „point of view“ on Goller's oeuvre. Although we are tempted to bring structuralist theorems and the semiotics of the 1980s into play, things may yet be entirely different. After all, Goller developped a saying for himself: when he wished to cautionsly extract his art from the broader connections made by art historians and to defend himself from them, then, as Volker Kahmen has recounted, he would introduce statements into conversations along the lines of „Yes, that is indeed Cubism, but one from Gummersbach“ or „Egypt, yes, but in Gummersbach“, referring to the town where he was born. Here we now have his cross, the cross - no, rather, with a nod of reverence, Goller has made it paradoxically indefinite and unambigous: „Ein - Kreuz - Aus Jerusalem“.

    • Bruno Goller, Ballspielende Mädchen, Circa 1950
      Dec. 08, 2020

Bruno Goller, Ballspielende Mädchen, Circa 1950

      Est: €25,000 - €30,000

Signed 'Bruno Goller' in light brown lower right. We would like to thank Ricarda Dick, Literatur- und Kunstinstitut Hombroich/Sammlung Kahmen, for kind confirmatory information. Bruno Goller's oeuvre is defined by enigmatic subjects which seem like relics from another time, featuring muted colour schemes and offering viewers diverse possibilities for associations. His “Ballspielende Mädchen” call to mind a frieze from a medieval illuminated manuscript or an ancient fresco. The extreme horizontal format is divided into four fields through the suggested depiction of coloured tent coverings and their wooden framework: in front of them, four girls in archaic robes throw a ball or hold it in their hands. Lined up one after the other, the players do not interact with each other; instead, they are isolated from one another, each captured in an individual moment of movement. Like the use of earthy tones of colour, the pictorial space's segmentation is characteristic of Goller's work from around 1950. The painting is from the personal collection of Matthias T. Engels, a senior principal in what was then the new federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia who began purchasing works by regional artists in order to support young talents as well as artists persecuted under the Nazi regime. The purchases made by his Ministry of Culture culminated in the collection “Kunst aus Nordrhein-Westfalen”, which has been housed in the former imperial abbey of Kornelimünster since the mid-1970s.

Mädchenkopf. Bleistift auf Velin. 48 x 58 cm (Passepartoutausschnitt). Gollers Malstil blieb stets vom magischen Realismus beeinflusst.
