      GREAT RUSSIAN LITERARY CLASSIC. Comprising an historic rendering of "The Epic of Igor," illustrated by Ivan Golikov, Academia Edition dated 1934. The classic is based on a 12th century poem in Old Russian literature and recounts the unsuccessful campaign of Prince Igor of Novgorod-Seversky against the nomadic Polovtsy people in 1185. With Russian text, the book exhibits rich page embellishments throughout and is complete with 10 full color, mounted illustrations in the ornate manner of the Palekh School. The mounted full-page illustrations, brilliant decorative endpapers, rich illumination and stunning pictorial covers make this a coveted work of art. This volume contains the Old Russian text of "Slovo o Polku Igoreve (Host of Igor's Lay), one of the greatest literary masterpieces of Russia. The illustrator, I. I. Golikov, worked in the old artistic manner of the Palekh School, which is characterized by an ornate style that usually utilized bright primary colors (especially red) against a shiny black background. It was the same technique employed to decorate lacquer boxes with fairy tale motifs, which are popular to this day.
