      Aug. 24, 2021

'J'-STAMPED PASSPORT OF AN AUSTRIAN GOLDSMITH

      Est: $500 - $600

'J'-STAMPED PASSPORT OF AN AUSTRIAN GOLDSMITH Passport issued to an Austrian goldsmith 'Julius Thurin', bearing a large, red 'J' on the first page. The 'reisepass' was issued to 42-year-old Thurin in Vienna on January 20, 1939, and still bears his identification photograph. The following page includes his particulars. The ninth page bears a Viennese stamp, dated Feb. 4, 1939, granting him a single journey to Australia via the Sri Lankan port of Colombo. Page 11 is stamped by the British Consolate in Zurich, granting him travel via the British port of Harwich en route to Amsterdam from March 1st, 1939. The adjoining page shows a checkpoint stamp from Zevenaar, a city in the eastern Netherlands near the German border, dated March 12, 1939. A handwritten annotation on the ninth page indicates his travel from Amsterdam to Colombo on March 22, 1939, and his departure from Colombo on April 15, 1939 en route to Australia. This is also attested to on the thirteenth page, with a stamp from the Colombo Harbour Police on April 13, 1939. Finally, his arrival in Australia is documented by a West Australian customs stamp on the eighth page, dated April 25, 1939. Fine condition.
