            Francis (Frank) Golden (1916 - 2008) Watercolor on Paper, Signed Lower Right, Measures ( 17.5 x 23 inches ) w/frame ( 26.5 x 39 inches ) Francis ("Frank") Golden was born in 1916 in Adams, Massachusetts and studied at Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston (graduated, 1939). In that year he traveled with a group of artists who had joined an artist's union. Golden settled in Chicago, moved to New York, then Connecticut and finally to Massachusetts.Golden has spent his life painting en plein aire, creating outdoor paintings in watercolor that editors of various magazines quickly bought and used as illustrations. "I became known as an illustrator," he said in 1999, "but my work is not illustrative! I'm a painter who paints because he has to paint in order to stay sane!" Nevertheless, his watercolors became some of the most popular images in sports magazines and he by 1974 he was highly respected as a wildlife and sporting scene painter probably because with enthusiasm and gusto he paints what he knows well with competence and virility.

            Francis (Frank) Golden (Massachusetts, 1916-2008) watercolor on paper landscape painting depicting a sporting scene of three men and two hunting dogs hunting geese near a small body of water, beneath a cloudy grey sky. Signed and dated "Francis Golden 74" with a copyright symbol, lower right. Housed and double matted under plexiglass in a wooden frame. Sight: 21 1/2" H x 29" W. Framed: 32" H x 38 1/2" W. Artist's biography: Francis (Frank) Golden is known for Plein-aire painting and sporting magazine illustration. He studied at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston where he graduated in 1939. Golden eventually settled in Chicago, moved to New York wherein 1939, he painted the background on Salvador Dali's "The Dream of Venus" for the World's Fair, then to Connecticut and finally to Massachusetts. From 1948-1978, Golden's painting became illustrations for Saturday Evening Post and his sporting scene subjects were popular in Sports Illustrated, Sports Afield, Gray's Sporting Journal, Audubon, Collier's and other prestigious magazines. Golden left commercial illustration painting in 1978 to concentrate on painting full time (Adapted from AskArt).

            Frank Vining Smith - Oil on Canvas "Golden Afternoon". Signed lower right. Ship is Golden Gate. 23 1/2 x 29 1/2 inches. In Arts and Crafts frame. Purchased from Vose Galleries in 1942.Old receipt from Vose included in sale. Painting needs cleaning-frame has chipping and loss of gold. Yellowing to the varnish. He was a member of the Guild of Boston Artists and a four-time winner of the Richard Mitton Gold Medal Award in the Jordan Marsh New England Artist's Show. One-man exhibitions of his paintings have been held in Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and New York. His marine paintings still hang in museums and private collections from coast to coast. He was a former rear commodore and lifetime member of the Cruising Club of America, and enjoyed memberships in both New Bedford and Hingham Yacht Clubs.

            Included in this lot we have a Frank J. Haynes albumen photograph featuring the Golden Gate in Yellowstone National park and originating from 1888. Frank Jay Haynes, known as F. Jay was a professional photographer, publisher, and entrepreneur from Minnesota who played a major role in documenting through photographs the settlement and early history of the great Northwest. Frank Jay Haynes first photographed Yellowstone National Park in 1881 and created a family dynasty that would span eighty plus years. This photograph displays the beautiful Golden Gate Canyon located in Yellowstone National Park showing wonderful sheer cliffs with a road going down the middle. The piece is set onto a grey card stock backing stamped "Haynes Inc Yellowstone Park". It is marked across the back reading "F. J. Haynes Golden Gate 1888 #2305 Albumen". The piece shows good condition with some light wear indicative of age. It measures 14 3/4" wide by 12" tall with the photo measuring 10 1/4" wide by 7 3/4" tall.
