            Feb. 10, 2023

Mary Anna Goetz Painting - Hudson Valley Winter Scene

            Est: $400 - $600

**Originally Listed At $500** Mary Anna Goetz (1946). Oil on canvas, n.d. Signed on lower left. A breathtaking Hudson Valley landscape by Mary Anna Goetz. While untitled, this wintery scene is similar to Goetz's "Snow Shadows" (c. 2004). A marvelous vista of a stream in the woods with a blanket of snow covering the forest floor as well as boulders in the reflective waters. Evergreens and leafless deciduous trees flank the stream, while a fallen branch bridges one side of the stream to the other in the middle distance. A tranquil winter paradise in the Catskill Mountains/Hudson River region finely painted by Mary Anna Goetz. Size: 9.5" L x 19.6" W (24.1 cm x 49.8 cm) Size of frame: 15" L x 25.1" W (38.1 cm x 63.8 cm) Born in Oklahoma City to artist parents Richard and Edith Goetz, Mary Anna Goetz earned her BFA at Oklahoma City University and did additional studies at the Malden Bridge School of Art, Cape School of Art in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and the New York Academy of Art. Goetz has painted for 4 decades, focusing on her surroundings in Oklahoma, New York City, Woodstock, and Cape Cod. She has had solo exhibitions at Grand Central Art Galleries, New York; Newman Galleries, Philadelphia; the James Cox Gallery in Woodstock, and Howell Gallery in Oklahoma City. In addition, she has taught at the Woodstock School of Art and belongs to both the National Arts Club and the Salmagundi Club in New York. Artist Statement: "When I first moved to Woodstock from Brooklyn, I was captivated by the Hudson Valley landscape. After years of painting urban scenes, I was grateful to have an unfettered opportunity to hike into the field to capture the expansive range of the Catskill Mountains and the many meadows, streams, vistas, and woodlands that make the scenery in our area so breathtaking. In recent years, however, I have been drawn to the vibrant town of Woodstock itself. The village green, shops along Tinker Street, gathering places like The Colony and The new Commons Saloon, the Woodstock Playhouse and Byrd-on-a-Cliff’s outdoor performance stage are among the many spots in and around town that have inspired me. In the meantime, I continue to make annual summer trips to Provincetown to teach and paint in another renowned 'Colony of the Arts.' As an artist, I will always be drawn to the beaches, wetlands, sand dunes, sunsets and famous 'Cape Light' that have made this historic area such a magnet for so many artists, for so many years." Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
