Roland Goeschl (Austrian, 1932-2016), "Dado a Colori"

        Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Roland Goeschl (Austrian, 1932-2016) "Dado a Colori" carved and painted wood titled at bottom. h. 9-3/4", w. 9-1/4", d. 9-1/2" Provenance: Venice, XXXIV Biennale Exhibition of International Art, 1968; Estate of Thomas B. Lemann, New Orleans, Louisiana. Exhibited: Venice, XXXIV Biennale Exhibition of International Art, 1968. Notes: The Austrian post-war avant-garde sculptor Roland Goeschl studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Fritz Wotruba (1907-1975) and later worked in Wotruba's studio as his primary assistant. Initially creating figural sculptures, Goeschl soon began deconstructing the figure into geometric forms, reconfiguring the elements into constructive sculptures. Following a brief time at the Royal College in London, Goeschl began to explore polychrome sculpture, adding the primary red, blue and yellow into his works. These sculptures require an active viewer, one who observes them from all sides and perspectives. Goeschl exhibited widely, most significantly at the Venice Biennale in 1968, from where the work presented here was acquired.

Bronze plate 15 x 21,7 in The present work is a rare piece from Roland Goeschl's time at the academy. In the technique of chased copper, which was unusual for him, forms are modelled that are still strongly reminiscent of his teacher Fritz Wotruba. This unique piece is a valuable testimony to Goeschl's academic training, where he experimented with a wide variety of techniques in order to later find his own distinctive formal language.

Plaster painted 58,3 x 16,9 x 12,5 in The present figure is an extremely rare, large-scale sculpture made of concrete and painted gold by one of the most important representatives of concrete art in Austria. This early exhibit is the model for an extremely rare bronze sculpture that is also presented at the Belvedere. The work was created while the artist was still an academician and marks an important turning point in his oeuvre. Still influenced by many fellow artists and above all by his teacher Fritz Wotruba, signs of his independent style can already be seen. The concrete, typical of his work, rises vertically from the ground and is painted gold, presumably to imitate the appearance of the bronze sculpture that was later cast. The work with first-class provenance was acquired by a family friend of the artist and has since been in private hands. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by a family friend. Since then in family possession.

Sketch to walkable Room, 1965 Oil Pastels on Paper Signed and dated lower right, as well as Verso signed, dated and titled 25,6 x 25,6 in framed Roland Goeschl became internationally known for his sculptures in the colors blue, yellow and red. Goeschl also designed the Humanic logo and created the facade of the Humanic building in Favoritenstraße. The artist also applies this color palette, which has become a "trademark" for Goeschl, in the present work. The dynamic lines condense in the central axis of the picture to form a sculptural body. One of the artist's most essential ideas was to achieve the greatest possible effect through restraint. All the characteristic elements can be united in this drawing. Two small tears in the paper (3mm) in the upper centre. Superficial scratch at the right image margin (ca. 27 cm). Slightly creased at margins. Does not disturb the overall impression.
