      William Godfrey (British, 19th century) Portrait of a young boy, John Godfrey, with a rabbit oil on canvas, in the original overpainted giltwood frame 29 1/2 x 24 1/2in. (75 x 62.25cm.) * With handwritten letter regarding the portrait and subject dated 1902, relating that the family lived at Southam, near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. ** Condition: Examined under UV - evidence of heavy repainting to lower right and upper half of canvas to dark background areas. Heavy varnish throughout, showing some signs of running and drips to upper area of head. 6in. repaired vertical split to lower left, through nose of rabbit, with small t-shaped split to lower end. Line of overlapped paper beneath paint to margins, approx. 1cm from edge of frame. Old relining with coarse canvas.
