      The Colleen Bawn Oil on canvas Signed in red 'S.B.Godbold', lower-right Enclosed in a gilt frame Exhibited: The British Institution, 1863, No. 363 Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 9 March 1976, Lot 67 Samuel Godbold was a portrait and genre painter, working with oil, watercolour and pastel. He visited Ireland regularly. Amongst his exhibited works are views of Galway, Killarney and Glenmore, executed between 1860 and 1866. He exhibited 66 works at the Royal Academy, 13 at the British Institution, and 45 at Suffolk Street. The Colleen Bawn was an Irish melodrama written by Dion Boucicault in 1860. Three film versions of the play have been produced. The opera, the Lily of Killarney, written by Sir Julius Benedict, is also based on the original play.
