      Est: £350 - £450

Elinor Glyn (British, 1864-1943) Jersey Militia Officers, tasting for the mess watercolour, pen & ink, dated September 14th 1883 lower right, signed and extensively inscribed by artist verso 6 3/4 x 8in. (17.2 x 20.25cm.) * Elinor Glyn (neé Sutherland) was born in Jersey on Oct. 17th 1864. She was a talented amateur artist, but later became very well known as a scriptwriter and romantic novelist, penning famous works such as Three Weeks, a bestselling tale of an exotic Balkan queen who seduces a young British aristocrat, which scandalized Edwardian society. ** This watercolour was presented by the artist to 'The Directors of Le Riches' in 1939, as a gift to say thank you for the "...charming welcome of me to the shop, on this, my visit, after 50 years." CONDITION REPORT: Faint browning to paper to edges. Black watercolour smudge just above left figure's head (original artist's error). A few fox spots to centre (at edge of dresser) and very faint water mark to barrel at right side. In a late Victorian or early Edwardian pressed tin photo frame with woodgrain mount - water marks to back board visible to eighter side of the watercolour, which does not fit the mount. Some surface rust to frame. Backing card extensively inscribed by the artist - still clearly legible. Water stain to lower left corner. Lower part of the 'G' and 'y' in artist's ink signature have leached slightly due to damp.
