        Nov. 16, 2022

Beatrice Glenavy (1883-1970) Roses,  oils on canvas c. 1952, Signed with monogram lower left ‘BG’,

        Est: €2,000 - €3,000

Beatrice Glenavy (1883-1970) Roses,  oils on canvas c. 1952, Signed with monogram lower left ‘BG’, 36cms x 25.5cms (14” x 10”) Inscribed on verso ‘Roses £10  Lady Glenavy RHA, Rockbrook House, Rathfarnham’ Set on a folded cloth, with beach and sea in the background, stands a vase containing a bouquet of roses. Cast perhaps in porcelain, or carved in stone, the monochrome vase is shaped like a hand holding a large bud, the base in the form of a wrist with lace cuff, encircled by a bracelet.  As well as pink roses, the bouquet also contains green ferns. It is a classic Glenavy still-life, one that combines realistic elements with more ambiguous, even surreal, elements. A painter fond of introducing such touches of the surreal into her landscapes and still-life paintings, Beatrice Glenavy (neé Elvery) was also a sculptor, stained-glass artist, theatre set painter, and illustrator of childrens’ books. Enrolling as a student at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin in 1896, she initially studied under the sculptor John Hughes, and later under the painter William Orpen. A gifted artist, Glenavy won three Taylor Scholarships, enabling her to travel to Paris, where she attended Colarossi’s studio. In 1903 she joined An Túr Gloine (Tower of Glass) and made windows for the Convent of Mercy in Enniskillen. Her allegorical portrait of Maud Gonne, Eire, was presented by Gonne to St. Enda’s, the Irish-speaking school set up by Patrick Pearse. In 1910, Glenavy moved to London, enrolling at the Slade School of Art. Two years later she married the barrister Charles Campbell (later 2nd Baron Glenavy), and devoted much of her life thereafter to raising three children, one of whom, Patrick Campbell, became a celebrated writer and broadcaster. An active member of the RHA (she was elected an associate member in 1932, and a full member two years later) Glenavy showed over two hundred works at the Academy. This painting may be the work entitled Pink Roses, exhibited at the RHA in 1952. Glenavy died in Dublin in 1970.

Lady Beatrice Glenavy RHA (1881-1970) The Bird Set Free oil on canvas monogrammed lower right & titled on reverse h:24.50  w:31 cm. Provenance: Private Collection Lady Beatrice Glenavy was born Beatrice Moss Elvery in 1881 and was an Irish stained-glass artist and painter. She attended the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art where William Orpen (1878-1931) taught painting and later used Beatrice as a model. Of his pupil, Orpen has said that she had many gifts, much temperament and great ability. Her only fault was that the transmission of her thoughts from her brain to paper or canvas, clay or stained glass became so easy to her that all was said in a few hours. She remained a friend and correspondent of Orpen until shortly before his death in 1931. When Sarah Purser (1848-1943) founded her studio An Túr Gloine (The Tower of Glass) in 1903, she invited Beatrice Elvery to be one of the designers and her first commission of six windows was installed in the Convent of Mercy, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh in 1905. Beatrice married Charles Campbell, 2nd Baron Glenavy in 1912 and they settled in London, returning to Ireland at the end of the war when she then concentrated on painting.

Literature: The Art of Beatrice Elvery, Lady Glenavy, Nicola Gordon-Bowe, Irish Arts Review, Vol II 1995, p169-175 Beatrice Glenavy began her studies at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art along with her sister Dorothy under William Orpen. She won the Queen's Prize for drawing (1900) and the Taylor Art Scholarship (1901) which enabled her to travel to Paris for further studies. On her return to Dublin Glenavy joined Sarah Purser's glass studio An Tur Gloine for a time before moving to London where she studied at The Slade School of Art under Wilson Steer and Henry Tonks. Glenavy was elected an RHA member in 1934, where she had been exhibiting for over 30 years and continued to do so up until the year of her death. During her lifetime she also exhibited at the Leinster Lecture Hall, Victor Waddington Galleries (solo show in 1955), Ritchie Hendriks Gallery, Leicester Galleries in London, the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy. Her work can be found in the collections of the National Gallery of Ireland, Crawford Municipal Gallery, Ulster Museum, Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane and the Office of Public Works.

Lady Beatrice Glenavy RHA 1881-1970 A serEnade Oil on canvas, 18" x 26" (46 x 69cm), signed and dated 1933. Beatrice Elvery was the second of seven children brought up in comfortable surroundings in Foxrock. The family ancestors had originated in Spain. Beatrice entered art college in Dublin where William Orpen was the star attraction. In later years Orpen painted several portraits of her and used her as a model. In 1901 she won the Taylor Scholarship. In 1902 she exhibited her first work, a statuette of a boy at the Royal Hibernian Academy. She went on to exhibit approximately 200 works at the Academy. In 1912 she married Gordon Campbell, later 2nd Baron Glenavy and settled in London where she moved in a very artistic circle. She returned to Ireland after the war and concentrated mainly on her painting. She was to exhibit at the Royal Academy and Royal Scottish Academy as well as the principal Dublin Galleries over the following years. Her work has a wonderfully romantic, fairy like quality and this is a particularly fine example. See Theo Snoddy, "Dictionary of Irish Artists, 20th Century", p. 142/143
