      Harry Glassgold (1908-1984) American, Serigraph. Signed and dated 1936 top right . Inscribed "AFT R 'Pres Cleveland' Str #28" on back. Depicts a busy beach scene. Provenance: Stateroom 28 of the American President Lines ocean liner S.S. President Cleveland. Overall size: 20 X 24 1/2 in. Sight size: 13 1/4 X 17 1/2 in. #1466 . Harry Glassgold was born in Tarnopol, Austria (now modern day Ternopil, Ukraine) in 1908. Little is known of his early life, and at some point his family fled war-torn Europe. He wound up studying at the New York School of Fine & Applied Art, eventually matriculating through Wayne University in Detroit, Michigan. He became the art supervisor for the Flint, Michigan public school system in 1945, and excelled as a painter, screen printer, and lecturer on art history. His work was exhibited in local galleries and salons throughout the 1930s and 40s, and can still be found on display in the Flint Institute of Art. He died in August 1984 in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

      Harry Glassgold, American, Michigan (1908 - 1984), "Sailing on the Bay," watercolor on paper, signed lower right and dated 1958, label verso from the Birmingham Gallery in Michigan, measures 13.75 x 21.25 inches to the matt edge, 22 x 28 inches framed. CONDITION: Good, strong colors. Harry Glassgold attended the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League from 1930 to 1932, where he studied under Raphael Soyer. He received immediate recognition for his work in watercolor and joined the Midtown Gallery at its inception and went on to exhibit at the ACA and AAA Galleries, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. For his work in that medium, Glassgold received several prestigious awards, among them the Albert Kahn Prize (1942), the John S. Newberry Purchase Prize, 1943, and the Flint Institute of Art (Best Watercolor), 1947. His works are held in the public collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Flint Institute of Arts, and many private collections, including of the Ford family.
