Paper strip, 13½ cm, 5¼ inches wide; printed in red and black and mounted on 19 balsa sticks (26 cm, 10¼ inches), fastened with a single screw; minor wear and foxing. B. Shackman & Co., New York. B. Shackman Company, was a manufacturer and wholesaler of vintage-inspired European- and American-made fine paper goods, established in 1898. The store, which moved locations several times over the decades, sold reproductions of vintage valentines, paper masks, mechanical toys, old-fashioned paper dolls, children's books, and souvenirs like this I Love NY fan.

MILTON GLASER (1929-2020) "I Love New York." Design revision submitted to Glaser, May 27, 1983. Illustration board with tracing paper overlay, and letter. 17½x20 cm, 7x7¾ inches; With pen and ink circle and small printed "I Love New York" logo laid down within; inked address of New York State Commerce Department on verso. With tracing paper overlay bearing inked notes; masking tape remnant across the top edge of both. Also with related typed letter to Milton Glaser on New York Division of Tourism letterhead. Graphic designer Milton Glaser sketched the original "I Love New York" logo in the back of a taxi in 1976, and the tourism campaign was officially launched the following year. Here, in 1983, the state's Division of Tourism sent Glaser the current version of the logo in black and white, scaled for use in a pinback button. An overlay of the heart in red notes the proper shading: "PMS warm red or 4-color combination." The accompanying 27 May 1983 letter from the division's group program manager Peggy Bendel reads "Dear Milton: I'm enclosing a repro sheet of the ILNY Logo with the registration mark. According to our Counsel, we must now use this format for all posters and publications."

Included in this lot are several works from Glaser’s creative process and resulting Superman poster and letterheads, which were created for an exhibition at the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. At the time, Glaser worked for DC Comics designing letterheads, brochures, logos, and the like. This lot includes the signed final poster; a black and white ink maquette with a color transparency that captures a human hand bursting through a backdrop, which provided the photomontage aspect of this image; the printer’s mechanicals, showing three progressive color drawings; two double-sided letterheads designed for the 50th anniversary of Superman; and one handwritten letter on Glaser’s DC notepad acknowledging the return of these materials from the Smithsonian exhibition. Milton Glaser Peace Poster [Heiwa, c.1981, Anti-War]. Measures 36 x 24 inches. EX+/NM condition. Unframed, loose and not glued, mounted or backed. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as condition can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. Our in-house shipping department will gladly pack and ship any item that fits into a 14x14x14 inch or 30x5x24 inch or equivalent or smaller box/folio if it is not fragile or over 25lbs. We will charge for labor to pack and process based on actual time it takes, actual cost of materials used to pack and actual shipper charges that will include insurance and signature required. We generally use USPS and Fed Ex and compare the pricing between the two. Books maximum box size will be 14x14x14 inch or equivalent and will be shipped USPS Media Mail unless otherwise requested. We gladly will give shipping estimates prior to auction. Please make this request at least 24 hours prior to auction for our shipping department to respond. If your invoice is for multiple items, we will use our discretion on requiring the use of an outside shipper. We reserve the right to require an outside shipper on any item(s) in the auction even if not stated.
