LOUIS S. GLANZMAN (1922-2013) Pippi Longstocking. A unique gift drawing of Glanzman's most famous story character, circa early 1970s. Ink on paper. 250x215 mm;10x8 1/2 inches. Inscribed and signed "Happy Birthday Mary-Beth / from LSG and Pippi Longstocking. Accompanied by an Autograph Letter Signed by Glanzman (to Mary-Beth's mother, who requested the drawing). 1 page, 8vo, dated April 1976, on Glanzman's stationery, mentioning that he, too, has a daughter named Mary-Beth and asks only for a modest reciprocal birthday remembrance in return for the drawing. A touching thank-you letter from his daughter for that promise kept is also included.

Ray Bradbury personally owned painting by Louis Glanzman, commissioned as the cover art for the 1963 edition of Bradbury's book, ''The Illustrated Man'', first published in 1951. Art depicts the title character, whose unique, animated tattoos serve as the frame story that ties together Bradbury's compilation of 18 short stories. This character of the tattooed man reappears later in Bradbury's classic, ''Something Wicked This Way Comes''. Glanzman's painting is casein on board, with a transparent overlay containing drawings of several of the eerie tattoos as well as contrasting paint highlights. Measures 15.75'' x 27.25''. Overlay is taped to board around its edges. Verso bears ink notations, likely by the book's publisher from printing. Painting itself is near fine. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate.

(114.3 x 186.7cm) provenance: Collection of Mrs. Paul''s Kitchen. note: On September 17, 1987 at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, America began the five year celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Constitution when Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, Park Superintendent Hobart Cawood and eight children rang the Liberty Bell replica officially commemorating that great day in 1787. On that day in 1987 the heritage of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights was passed from one generation to the next whose responsibility it will be to observe and protect our most important document and all that it represents. The Copernicus Society of America commissioned noted artist Louis Glanzman to capture that moment in time and the final work, "Passing a Legacy", does it beautifully. Chief Justice Burger and Park Superintendent Cawood symbolically relinquish the responsibility to observe and protect the United State Constitution and the Bill of Rights to the next generation of Americans who are represented by the diverse ethnicity of the eight children who are ringing the Liberty Bell. As a point of interest, artist Louis Glanzman painted himself into the painting even though he was not actually present on September 17, 1987. He is the silver haired gentleman wearing glasses and smoking a cigar on the far right of the painting. We wish to thank Erik Nelson for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
