ARTIST: SERGE GLADKY (1880-1930) SIZE: 22 x 30 7/8 in./56 x 78.6 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: Jean Borlin, the Swedish dancer and choreographer, founded and presented the instantly successful Swedish Ballet in Paris during the 1920 season of the Théâtre de Champs-Élysées. He was something of a multi-disciplinarian, determined "to enlarge the field of ballet, and re-invigorate it, by bending to its service the newest tendencies in art, music, and literature, yet never allowing any of these elements to dominate the dance... Experiment succeeded experiment, each bolder than the last... After years, it is sometimes difficult to understand the clamour excited by certain productions, so often is the sensation of to-day the commonplace of to-morrow. But the pioneers are sacrificed on the altar of progress, and Borlin suffered from being in advance of his time... [He] disbanded the ‘Ballets Suédois’ [in 1925]... but continued to give dance recitals both in France and abroad” (Complete Book of Ballets, by Cyril W. Beaumont, p. 669-670). How appropriate that Gladky’s Modernist construct should immortalize one of the dancer’s final appearances in an undocumented piece that facilely sums up Borlin’s unifying muse: "Eternal Circle.” This version omits the theatre, ballets, and other details, including the fact that decor for Borlin’s ballets was provided by Paul Colin, Gladky, F. Lose Blatt in illustrierter OHalbleinenmappe (diese etwas unfrisch) mit Schließbändern. Paris, Éditions d'Art Charles Moreau, (um 1928). -- Künstlerisch aussagekräftige und aufwendig gedruckte Folge im Stil des Art Déco. In satten und strahlenden Farben druckt Serge Gladky geometrische Formen, die erst nach genauerem Hinschauen erkennbare Szenen wiedergeben, wie beispielsweise Tafel 30: Dadurch, dass die Formen in den Farben Gelb, Rot und Lila gedruckt sind, erkennt man schnell die zweifach dargestellte, aufbrechende Sonne hinter den Bergen. – Selten fleckig und mit Abklatsch, ansonsten schönes und breitrandiges Exemplar.

Here he employs pochoir, a hand-stencilling technique popular in the first decades of the 20th century, to produce colourful, abstract plates.
