William James Glackens Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, Still life painter, Landscape painter, b. 1870 - d. 1938

(b Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1870; d New York, New York, 1938) American painter. William Glackens began his career as an illustrator for the Philadelphia Press. He was encouraged to study at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts by Robert Henri. Following a trip to Europe he settled in New York City in 1895. Glackens became a member of The Eight; the revolutionary group of realist artists led by Henri; and established a studio on Washington Square South, where he devoted himself to painting the parks and city squares of New York. His success as a professional artist began with the now-legendary exhibition entitled simply "The Eight," held at the Macbeth Gallery in New York. Around 1908 Glackens began developing a more Impressionistic style that included both assertive color as well as feathery brushstrokes reminiscent of the technique of Renoir. Glacken began depicting seaside resorts as early as 1908 in Cape Cod, but his most impressive works of this type were painted in Bellport, Long Island. He painted his most successful Impressionist works from 1911 until 1916 while spending his summers on the south shore of Bellport; there he developed a fully Impressionist technique, a painting style that he had become familiar with when traveling to Paris in 1912. In 1925 Glackens embarked on an eight-year sojourn to Paris with Robert Henri, Elmer Schofield and his family. Significantly, Glackens did not enroll in a Parisian art academy as so many fellow American painters did, and instead focused completely on his independent work. William James Glackens American, (1870 - 1938) Yes, good mamma, yes-I'm going to lock up your silver spoon / Here is our music, and I imagine it will be first-class / You like it, drink it 3 1904 book illustration etchings Includes 3 book pages from works by Charles Paul de Kock. Biography from the Archives of askART: Born in Philadelphia, William Glackens became an Impressionist painter who modified the style by retaining delineation of figures. But early in his career, he was an active Social Realist when the 'Ash Can' approach to painting was being promoted by Glackens' good friend, Robert Henri. However, Glackens eschewed subjects of the seamier side of society and adopted more refined depictions such as upper class persons strolling in parks, sitting in cafes, and studio posed still lifes and figures. Of Glackens' inclination to distance himself from less-than-pleasant subjects, art historian Matthew Baigell wrote: "Of all the realists around Henri, Glackens was perhaps least attracted to the life of the streets, preferring scenes of middle-class activities in parks, in the theater, at shopping, or on vacation." (136). He also did many paintings of seaside resorts on Cape Cod and Long Island, particularly Bellport where he and his family spent summers. Surprising to many of his associates was the fact that even though he had much exposure in Europe to avant-garde thinking, he expressed little interest in the modernist art movements that followed Impressionism and that took such hold among his peers. Glackens graduated from Philadelphia's Central High School with John Sloan, and in 1891 became an artist-reporter for the "Philadelphia Record." He did the same kind of work from 1892 to 1895 for the "Philadelphia Press". He studied briefly at the Pennsylvania Academy with Thomas Anshutz, and there formed a strong bond of friendship with John Sloan, George Luks, Everett Shinn and Robert Henri and then shared a studio and traveled in Europe with Henri. He spent a year in Paris where he painted many scenes of life in the parks and cafes. Glackens settled in New York, worked as an illustrator, and in 1898, went to Cuba as an artist-reporter for "McClure's" magazine of the Spanish-American War. He became part of "The Eight," a landmark exhibition of urban realists, led by Henri, at the Macbeth Galleries. In 1912, he went on an extensive art-buying trip in Europe for Albert Barnes, a friend from high school who had amassed a fortune from an antiseptic gargle solution. Barnes built a huge home and museum in Merion, a suburb of Philadelphia, and established the Barnes Museum. The many works of Renoir, Degas, Van Gogh and Cezanne that Glackens purchased for Barnes became the center of the Museum collection. This project also firmed Glackens' interest in the Impressionists, especially Renoir from whom he adopted "soft, feathery brush-work and rich, variegated colorism, with emphasis on sift pinks, yellows and greens"...(Gerdts 281) Source: Matthew Baigell, "Dictionary of American Art" William Gerdts, "American Impressionism"

Lot Essay The present work is a study for William Glackens' The Soda Fountain (1935), now in the permanent collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The pair, nearly identical save for size, is a testament to Glackens' preoccupation with urban sites and spaces. Unlike earlier paintings that depict bustling social settings or outdoor scenes, The Soda Fountain–both preliminary study and final version–offers a more intimate and nuanced view. The central grouping includes a young woman seated confidently at the counter, one gloved hand clutching her purse while the other dabs the corner of her mouth. A second figure, possibly a companion, sits with her left arm akimbo; her yellow hat offers a chromatic parallel to her counter-mate's dress and a nearby arrangement of lemons. Glackens bathes the pair in warm light which, in turn, accentuates their self-assured postures and fashionable, yet unpretentious attire. Delicate brushwork and a pastel-like palette reveal the artist's indebtedness to Renoir, to whom he was often compared. The soda clerk, who, in the final version was modeled after Glackens' son, Ira, fills a glass behind the counter. It is within this subtle portrayal that Glackens captures the essence of his subject. The women are not defined by the company they keep, but rather by a kind of comfortable independence. Occupying the soda fountain on their own terms, they partake in a leisure activity traditionally associated with couples, but without the need for male accompaniment. (Even the soda clerk, the composition's lone male figure, is at some remove, both physically and psychologically.) While the present study (and PAFA's version) do not directly address social or political matters, together they reflect a changing social landscape–one that Glackens understood and appreciated all too well. Claiming public spaces and leisure activities for themselves, his female protagonists embody a newfound sense of self and individual agency, and attest to the evolving role of women in the first few decades of the 20th century.

  • William Glackens, French Landscape,
    Oct. 19, 2023

    William Glackens, French Landscape,

    Est: $5,000 - $50,000

Origin: American Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions:  Condition: Very Good Additional Information: William Glackens original oil titled, French Landscape. This is a companion work to his other French landscape painting(s) on his travel to Europe in 1895 (ref: William Glackens (1870-1938) (christies.com) ).    Hand signed at bottom left. Stein Gallery paper placard on the back of the canvas.  William James Glackens (March 13, 1870 – May 22, 1938) was an American realist painter and one of the founders of the Ashcan School, which rejected the formal boundaries of artistic beauty laid-down by the conservative National Academy of Design. The Smithsoian American Art Museum describes Glackens as a painter, illustrator, and member of The Eight. At the beginning of his career, Glackens painted scenes of middle-class life and used a rich, dark palette; in later years, he favored still lifes and studio scenes, his colors reflecting the influence of Pierre Auguste Renoir.
