Andre Gisson Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1922 - d. 2003

Andre Gisson, named Anders Gittelson at birth, was born into poverty. Living in New York, Gisson took a keen interest in renowned Impressionists such as Monet and was dedicated to his pursuit of becoming a great artist. He legally changed his name to sound more French and endeavored to change his social status. The style of Andre Gisson's artwork reveals his wish to be seen as urbane. Prints by Andre Gisson depict landscapes, seascapes, and occasional portraits.

Paintings by Andre Gisson show his use of vivid colors swept in small, discernible brushstrokes. Through his own cunning and versatility as an artist, Gisson enjoyed the success he sought. Indeed, President Lyndon B. Johnson was among the famous collectors of Andre Gisson's prints. He spent 40 years working in Connecticut and New York, until his death in 2003. Andre Gisson (French,NY,CT,1921-2003) oil painting

    Est: $1,200 - $1,500

ARTIST: Andre Gittelson Gisson (New York, Connecticut, France, 1921 - 2003) TITLE: Still Life with Vase of Flowers MEDIUM: oil on canvas CONDITION: Very good. No visible inpaint under UV light. ART SIZE: 20 x 16 inches / 50 x 40 cm FRAME SIZE: 27 x 23 inches / 68 x 58 cm SIGNATURE: upper right LOCATION: This lot is located at our Dania Beach, FL office. NAME VARIANTS: Anders Gittelson CATEGORY: old antique vintage painting for auction sale online AD: ART WANTED: Consign, Trade In, Cash Offer SKU#: 149027 US SHIPPING: $119 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: Although many sources cite him as a French painter, Andre Gisson was in reality a struggling painter in New York City. To enhance his reputation, he claimed to be French and adopted the brush name of Andre Gisson. He also professed to have been born in 1910 rather than his true birth date of 1921, to be more closely aligned with the founders of the Impressionist movement. Gisson's real name was Anders Gittelson. Born in 1921 in Brooklyn, he graduated from the Pratt Institute and was a Captain in the Army during World War II. His paintings reflect his adopted Francophile persona, backed by travels and studies in Europe and the Far East and his desire to appear cosmopolitan in background. Over four decades, his one-man shows extended from New York, Washington, Texas and California to London, Paris and Tokyo. Gisson's landscapes, beach scenes, and portraits were intended to create a reflective mood of serenity. The still-lifes show Japanese influence in his work, while the French influence is more pronounced in his landscapes, beach scenes and studies of the human figure. However, there is little question that the artist approached his subject matter with a singular gesture, and with the "romantic" history of his persona, Gisson has a strong following among collectors of his works. Paintings by Andre Gisson can be found in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution and the Triton Museum of Art, in North Carolina. Among his private collectors were President Lyndon B. Johnson and W. Somerset Maugham.

    Mar. 29, 2025

Andre Gisson (1921-2003) American, Impressionist Beach Scene Oil on Canvas

    Est: $500 - $1,000

André Gisson (1921-2003) American, Impressionist Beach Scene Oil on Canvas. Dominated by the cloudy sky, with colorfully dressed figures resting on rocks by the shoreline at the bottom and a crowd of umbrellas in the distance on the left. Signed bottom right.  Overall Size: 32 1/4 x 44 1/4 in.  Sight Size: 23 1/2 x 25 1/2 in. #6062 .    André Gisson was born Anders Gittelson in Brooklyn, New York in 1921. Raised in relative poverty, he eventually obtained a scholarship to study at the Pratt Institute, graduating with an art degree. Heavily inspired and influenced by the Impressionists, he found it difficult to obtain a loyal audience for his works in America, and volunteered to serve in the United States Army during World War II, rising to the rank of Captain while stationed in France. While there he found people far more interested in his work, and legally changed his name after the end of war. He remained in Europe for a time, studying art history and exploring many genres and styles there and, later, in Asia. He created hundreds of paintings throughout his lifetime, frequently paying for room and board with his work and rarely painting the same scene twice. He returned to the United States in the 1960s, with his works now more appreciated for their unique style and homages to the early French Impressionists. He eventually moved to Westport, Connecticut in 1977, where he set up a home studio and taught lessons as well as selling and exhibiting his work. In 2001 his health took a swift turn for the worse and he moved to Atlanta, Georgia to escape the colder winters, where he died on July 28th, 2003. Today his work can be found on permanent display at the Triton Museum of Art, and in many private collections including the estates of President Lyndon B. Johnson and W. Somerset Maugham.
