Artist and painter Roland Gissing was born in 1895 in Worcester, England. Though Gissing had barely acquired formal training, he studied art for a few years at the George Watson’s College in Scotland. Gissing's love of the cowboy lifestyle motivated him to move to Canada in 1913. In 1929, Roland Gissing first showcased his paintings, created in pastels and watercolors, at the Calgary Public Library. In the early 1930s, artist Roland Gissing began working in oils, depicting scenes of the natural landscapes of Alberta. It was 1934 when Gissing opened his first extensive solo exhibition of oils at the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede to overwhelming accolades and critical success.
