Antonio Gisbert Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1834 - d. 1901

Antonio Gisbert Pérez (19 December 1834 – 27 November 1901) was a Spanish artist situated on the cusp between the realist and romantic movements in art. He was known for painting pictures of important events in a country's history in a realistic style, yet clearly with a political aim as well; his variance in styles puts him in the Spanish eclectic school of painters. He generally tried to promote liberal causes in his politics and paintings.

ANTONIO GISBERT PÉREZ (Alcoy, Alicante, 1834 - Paris, 1902). "Meditation on reading". Oil on canvas. It has repainting on the pictorial surface and damage to the frame. It has an old label on the back. It shows initials of the author on the stretcher. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 81,5 x 65,5 cm; 106 x 90 cm (frame). The historical theme was a constant in Gisbert's painting, who not only developed works where the subject matter referred to specific themes from antiquity, but also turned history into an aesthetic current in such a way that the style invaded his painting, thus surpassing the theme itself. The present work is an example of this, in which the artist presents a figure in his study, engrossed in reading. His clothing, hairstyle and the furniture that accompanies him take us back to the Renaissance, thus showing us an idealised image dominated by stillness and silence, which are enhanced by the use of a sober palette invaded by the intense red of the measures carried by the protagonist. The exercise of reading was of great importance to Gisbert, as can be seen in the self-portrait of the artist in the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, a work with which the present work has great similarities. Antonio Gisbert was a Spanish painter of historical themes, active during the transition from Romanticism to Realism. He studied at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid and later in Rome and Paris. He represents a pictorial trend typical of the second half of the 19th century: the painting of major events related to national history. This is what is known as "history painting" or "retrospective realism", which aims to depict events from the country's historical past with the realism and veracity of a chronicler. He was also famous for his portraits, particularly those kept in the Congress of Deputies. He was also director of the Prado Museum between 1868 and 1873, when he moved permanently to Paris. In the short period of six years - four calls for entries for the National Exhibition of Fine Arts - Gisbert won three gold medals almost consecutively: in 1858 (a work sent from Italy), 1860 and 1864. His is a tight painting, with perfect draughtsmanship and skilful staging. Of particular importance in his career was his friendship with the Duke of Aosta, the future Amadeo I, whom Gisbert portrayed on two occasions, making him little less than a court painter. Gisbert's artistic profile is divided into two distinct phases. The first belongs to his period in Madrid and as a pensioner in Rome, and is characterised by historical works of a vindictive nature. The second corresponds to the longer period in Paris, during which he developed a more colourful and luminous style of gallant, amiable and anecdotal painting, more colourful and luminous but lacking in social commitment. Antonio Gisbert is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the Casón del Buen Retiro, the Fine Arts Museums of Alicante and Bilbao and the Museum of Mexican History, among others.
