      Nov. 22, 2024

Charles Giroux, French/Louisiana 1828-1885, Bayou Landscape, oil on canvas, 20 in. x 16 in.

      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Charles Giroux French/Louisiana, 1828-1885 Bayou Landscape oil on canvas Unsigned, 20 in. x 16 in., framed with artist and title plaque, overall 25 1/4 in. x 21 1/2 in. x 1 3/4 in. Note: Though mystery surrounds the early background of French-born painter Charles Giroux, his rare surviving works record many aspects of the rural Louisiana landscape dating from around 1860 to 1885. He was last mentioned in the Daily Picayune for October 25, 1885, as well as in a list of the New Orleans Artists' Association for the same year. The exceptional qualities of his artwork were recognized in the Daily Picayune article: "The work is remarkably well finished. The same careful study and painstaking care that characterizes all Mr. Giroux's works is apparent in every line and shadow." The same article noted the artist's fascination with creating landscapes with an extensive use of vanishing perspective. Giroux's compositional style and color palette are considered unique among his contemporaries in the Louisiana landscape genre, and his works are distinguished by their romantic hues, smooth brushwork, luminous skies, and powerful recession of composition. These traits are all seen in the important work offered here which boasts a sunny, bright blue sky starkly contrasted against the shadowy darkness of the moss-draped tree and white, cloudy horizon. While nineteenth century Louisiana landscapes often lean gloomy and mysterious, this painting by Giroux showcases the rich and varied textures of the life cycle of the bayou from the leaning dead tree in the far distance to the richly verdant, moss-covered oaks and rusty leaves of the brush along the shore. Life is abundant in the stippled texture of the running water and the striking speckles of colorful flowers that grow in the shade of the shoreline. This canvas proves a stunning ode to Louisiana's unique and alluring terrain.

      Charles Giroux (French/Louisiana, 1928-1885)

      Est: $12,000 - $18,000

Charles Giroux (French/Louisiana, 1928-1885), "Early Morning Fishing", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 12 1/4 in. x 20 1/2 in., framed with artist plaque, overall 19 3/4 in. x 27 7/8 in. x 2 1/2 in. Note: Charles Giroux's compositional style and color palette are considered unique among his contemporaries in Louisiana landscape painting. His works are distinguished by their romantic hues, smooth brushwork, luminous skies and powerful recession of composition. The special qualities of his canvases were recognized in an October 23, 1885 Daily Picayune article: "The work is remarkably well finished. The same careful study and painstaking care that characterizes all Mr. Giroux's works is apparent in every line and shadow." The same article noted the artist's fascination with creating landscapes with an extensive use of vanishing perspective. In the lot offered here, the contrasting areas of light and dark present a transcendental calm and serenity that bespeaks the genteel Southern life of the inhabitants of Giroux’s paintings. Recent conservation of the tranquil scene led to the exciting discovery of a previously overpainted figure fishing along the shoreline near the shade of the oak trees, adding further narrative to this charming panorama.

Note: Arriving in New Orleans around 1860, Charles Giroux quickly began painting his favorite subject, Louisiana landscapes. The majority of his works center around the local countryside, making use of Giroux’s romantic, luminous palette. In the rare and fascinating painting offered here, a Native American woman sits in front of a thatched hut, which would have been the preferred summer residence in Southern Louisiana, facilitating better air flow. The various tribes in the Louisiana/Mississippi area, including the Caddo, Atakapa, Tunica, Natchez, Chitimacha, and Choctaw, used the natural materials around them to build shelters and also to create beautiful works of functional art, including bead work and basket weaving. Here, Giroux illustrates a beautiful landscape and a unique window into 19th c. life in Louisiana.

      Charles Giroux (French, 1828-1885)

      Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Charles Giroux (French, 1828-1885, act. New Orleans, 1868-1885), "Settlement along the Bayou", oil on wood panel, monogrammed lower left, handwritten inscription en verso of backing paper, 4 3/4 in. x 9 3/4 in., framed. Provenance: Jay P. Altmayer Family Collection, Mobile, AL. Note: The attention to detail in this jewel-like and beautifully painted scene reflects Giroux’s skillful technique, exhibiting minute brushstrokes that create the small figures and architectural aspects of the houses. Giroux's work offered here is extremely similar to a larger painting in the Maxim Karolik collection at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (acc. no. 47.1144) and includes the same road and tree along a river, although the scene is reversed. The addition of a steamboat along the horizon line is a lovely touch and gives the viewer an idea of what everyday life along a river would have been like in late 19th century Louisiana.

Provenance: Carol Bowsky, New Orleans, 1962; Jay P. Altmayer Family Collection, Mobile, AL. Note: A charming example of Giroux’s distinctive landscapes, this depiction of Lake Pontchartrain exemplifies the artist’s skillful brushwork and adept use of color. The scene along the shore exhibits moss-laden trees and a small cabin with figures. The luminous skyline is beautifully painted, while the inclusion of cypress knees extending from the water adds an element of texture to the water's surface.

Charles Giroux (b. France, c. 1828, active New Orleans 1868-1885), "Une Scène Acadienne", oil on canvas, unsigned, 14 1/8 in. x 17 3/8 in. Note: Charles Giroux depicted the rural landscapes of Louisiana's bayou country from the 1860s to the 1880s. Employing a unique style, perspective and compositional format, his work is often unsigned. The painting offered here relates closely to a signed work in the collection of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art from the collection of Roger H. Ogden. Both works depict a similar cabin along a curved bayou with chickens in the yard and a flock of ducks paddling in the water, with a woman in a blue dress and a man in a red shirt. Additionally, each has a fence line with a similar perspective of a dirt road running on the diagonal, and large moss-laden trees in the foreground. The billowing clouds and distinctive bright coloration are other traits of this painting that are quintessentially characteristic of Giroux. Reference: Seibels, The Sunny South: The Life and Art of William Aiken Walker. — Limited biographical information is available about Giroux, however, this painting is another demonstration of the unique connection between the artist and his contemporary, William Aiken Walker (1839-1921). Some time after 1868, when Giroux began working in New Orleans, he is known to have resided occasionally at the Blanchard home on Magazine Street. During that time he served as an instructor to their daughter Blanche and likely became acquainted with Walker, who also had been engaged as her teacher. In the summer of 1883, Giroux and Walker exhibited paintings of black subjects at the Canal Street gallery of Samuel Blessings, as Cynthia Seibels notes in her book, The Sunny South, "..before going off on their summer journeys". John Fowler, author of the forthcoming Walker catalogue raisonné, has suggested this work may have been completed during one of those field trips. Giroux and Walker exhibited at Blessing’s again in the fall of 1885 and garnered positive reviews for their depictions of plantation hands during the cotton picking season. This painting reveals in small part, the inspiration of Walker upon Giroux, who was primarily a landscapist, and serves as an interesting illustration of their exchange of ideas and distinctive artistic styles.
