In spring 1900 Pierre Girieud moved into a Paris studio and quickly forged close ties to distinguished contemporaries, including Georges Rouault and Pablo Picasso. From about 1902 Girieud developed a style that is exemplified by our work: with its turbulent brushwork and surface-covering, strongly contoured handling in a palette of complementary colours, it reveals the influence of van Gogh and Gauguin. Girieud showed work at the acclaimed 1905 Paris Salon d'Automne and was, therefore, one of the original Fauves. The following year saw Girieud's friendship with Marianne von Werefkin and Alexei von Jawlensky deepen, with far-reaching effects on the development of Expressionism in Munich: it was thanks to Girieud that Werefkin and Jawlensky began to immerse themselves in Gauguin's cloisonné style of painting. In 1909 Pierre Girieud was the only French artist to show work at the first exhibition mounted by the Neue Künstler Vereinigung in Munich, of which he became a member in 1910. His style and the network of ties he maintained with other artists ensured that Pierre Girieud exerted a paramount influence on the development of the Neue Künstler Vereinigung and the Blauer Reiter, which grew out of it. Nevertheless, Girieud's services to German Expressionism were forgotten in the turmoil that overtook Germany. Not until recent years has Girieud been rediscovered and appreciated as he deserves to be. [NB] In good condition. Barely noticeable margin retouchings.
