      Louis C. Girault (American/Louisiana)

      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Louis C. Girault (American/Louisiana, act. New Orleans, 1870-1892), "Bay Jaune (Fishing Camp on Pilings)", oil on artist board, signed lower right, partial "F.W. Devoe & Co., NY" label en verso, 11 3/4 in. x 18 1/4 in., period frame. Provenance: Collection of Dagmar Foley, New Orleans, LA. Note: Louis Girault, a cooper and cigar and tobacco merchant, pursued a career as an artist in the New Orleans area, where he was known to have honed his craft by copying works by other artists, including the renowned Richard Clague. This painting of a fishing camp on Bay Jaune closely follows an earlier painting of the same subject by Clague (sold in these rooms November 18, 2017, lot 344), which was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Aristide Hopkins of New Orleans and Biloxi. The Hopkins family was known for hosting social events for local artists at their family homes, and it is likely that is where Girault saw the painting. From there, he could have done sketches based on the painting itself, or gone to visit the site of the fishing camp before completing his own version.
