    Brown patinated bronze France, end of 19th century Grégoire Giraud (1783-1836) - French sculptor F. Barbedienne foundry, Paris Incised on the base with the foundry mark 'F. Barbedienne Fondeur' Relief border with hunting scenes Dimensions: 11 x 16 x 10 cm Very good condition Provenance: from a German private collection This bronze of a 'Lying Dog' was designed in the 19th century by the French sculptor Grégoire Giraud (1783-1836) and cast by the foundry F. Barbedienne in Paris. The dog is mounted on an oval base - probably a blanket. Below that is an oval plinth, whose borders are decorated with sculptured hunting scenes. On the base is the incised foundry mark 'F. Barbedienne Fondeur'. The condition of the bronze is very good showing only minor signs of age and wear. The dimensions of the bronze with base are 11 x 16 x 10 cm. Grégoire Giraud (1783-1836) Pierre-François Grégoire Giraud was born in 1783 in Luc (Var). After studying economics, he moved to Paris in 1793, where he devoted himself to literature and sculpture. As a student of Claude Ramey, he was awarded with the 'Prix de Rome' in 1806. He then moved to Italy for seven years. Giraud's works are clearly influenced by the ancient art and the French naturalism.
