The first depicts the Finding of Paris. According to the Iliad, Paris’ mother had a prophetic dream foreseeing the destruction of Troy. Frightened, she decided to abandon her newborn son on the slopes of Mount Ida, where he was found and raised by a shepherd. The second panel, depicting a huntress and a soldier, is harder to interpret, but is probably also based on Ovid’s Metamorphoses. It may refer to the story of the Calydonian boar hunt: Atalanta was the first to wound the animal and received its fur as award, after Meleager dealt the death blow. Between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, Ovid’s texts became widely popular, aided by the spread of engravings depicting these subjects and the publication of the first illustrated edition of the Metamorphoses in 1497. In his treatise Le maraviglie dell’arte (Venice 1648, p. 79), Carlo Ridolfi recalls that Giorgione ‘painted shields, wardrobes, and many chests on which he principally depicted Ovid’s fables’, also confirming the Venetian preference for painted furniture. The influence of Giorgione’s style is evident in these paintings, both in the classicising and allegorical representation of the natural landscape and in the figures’ poses. For instance, there are notable similarities with the painter’s most famous work, The Tempest (Venice, Gallerie dell’Accademia, inv. no. 915), or with the fragmentary Finding of Paris in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest (inv. no. 95), possibly a copy of a lost Giorgione painting.

Giorgio Vasari nannte in der ersten Ausgabe seiner Lebensbeschreibungen – erschienen 1550 – das Geburtsjahr 1477, in der zweiten Ausgabe von 1568 korrigierte er das Datum auf 1478. Lehre gemeinsam mit Tizian in der Werkstatt des Giovanni Bellini in Venedig. Rückkehr nach Castelfranco, dort Ausführung eines Auftrags für eine Kapelle der Stadtpfarrkirche. Um 1505 wieder in Venedig, Ausführung zahlreicher, nicht erhaltener Fresken. 1508 Auftrag für ein Leinwandgemälde für den Audienzsaal des Dogenpalastes. Tod aufgrund eines Pestinfektion, überliefert nur durch einen Brief der Isabella d''Este. Arthur Geissler 1887 Erfurt – um 1963 Dresden 1902–1905 an der Staatlichen Kunsthochschule Erfurt. 1906–09 Studium bei Richard Müller und Ferdinand Dorsch an der Dresdner Akademie. In den 1910er Jahren unternahm er Studienreisen nach England, Frankreich, Ungarn, Jugoslawien und Polen. Anfertigung von Kopien Alter Meister in der National Gallery London, der Alten Pinakothek München, dem Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum und der Staatlichen Gemäldegalerie Berlin sowie in der Staatlichen Gemäldegalerie Dresden. Ab 1927 Juror bei Dresdner Kunstausstellungen. In der Staatlichen Gemäldegalerie als Vorstand und Vertrauensmann der kopierenden Künstler sowie Ehrenamtliche Mitarbeit im Künstlerbeirat des Sächsischen Kunstvereins. Zudem war er als Schauspieler tätig. 1945 wurde ein Großteil seiner Werke bei einem Bombenangriff auf Dresden zerstört.

DAS WUNDER DES EIFERSÜCHTIGEN EHEMANNS Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 60 x 30 cm. Verso auf Rahmen Königliches rotes Sammlungssiegel aus Wachs sowie Museumsaufkleber. In Prunkrahmung. Das Gemälde entstand im 18./19. Jahrhundert, geht auf ein Fresko von Tiziano Vecellio zurück, das im Jahr 1511 als Teil der Dekoration der Scuola del Santo in Padua ausgeführt wurde. Das Thema behandelt die Geschichte einer Frau, die zu Unrecht des Ehebruchs beschuldigt und von ihrem eifersüchtigen Ehemann erstochen wird. Im Zentrum der Ehemann in wertvollem, rot-weiß gestreiften Gewand mit erhobenem Dolch, um auf seine am Boden zusammengesunkene und bereits verwundete Ehefrau erneut einzustechen. Eine weitere kleinere Darstellung im rechten Hintergrund zeigt den Ehemann kniend vor dem Heiligen Antonius und seinen zwei Begleitern, nachdem er die Wahrheit herausgefunden hat und den Heiligen um Vergebung bittet, welcher die Frau daraufhin auferweckt. Erzählerische Darstellung, bei der der idyllische Hintergrund von Gemälden Giorgiones inspiriert ist. Provenienz: Sir R. Gow MA, Oxford. Privatsammlung, Rheinland. LA TEMPESTA (DAS GEWITTER) Öl auf Leinwand. 85,5 x 73 cm. In vergoldetem, teils durchbrochenen Prunkrahmen. Am Ufer eines Flusses, rechtsseitig auf einer Wiese sitzend, eine junge nackte Frau mit einem weißen Umhang, der ihren Schulterbereich bedeckt, gerade einem kleinen Kind ihre Brust gebend. Linksseitig des Flusses wird sie dabei von einem jungen, elegant stehenden Mann beobachtet. In der Mitte der breite Fluss, über den eine hölzerne Brücke führt, vor den noch von der Sonne bestrahlten Bauten einer Stadt. Im darüberliegenden hohen Himmel dichte, teils dunkle Wolken und ein gelblicher zuckender Blitz erkennbar. Anmerkung: Unser Gemälde ist im 19. Jahrhundert nach dem Original des venezianischen Malers Giorgione entstanden. Dieses datiert um 1508 und befindet sich in der Accademia in Venedig. Das Gemälde hat bisher keine gültige und in allen Aspekten befriedigende Deutung erfahren. Diese Rätselhaftigkeit dürfte wohl eine Ursache der Faszination sein, die es seit Jahrhunderten immer wieder auf den Betrachter ausübt. (1380645) (18)

Sleeping Venus and Cupid. Pen and brown ink over traces of black chalk on cream laid paper mounted on card stock. 172x285 mm; 6x11 inches. Ex-collection Moriz K”nig (Lugt 1587, verso on the mount); Paul Davidsohn (Lugt 654, lower left recto); Friedrich Lbbecke and Reinhard Piper, the last 2 according to an inscription on the mount verso. With attributions to Giulio Campagnola in ink (in Italian and French), lower left recto and verso on the mount. The attributions to Campagnola (circa 1482-circa 1518) are likely based on the stipple effect of the drawing, which echoes prints by Campagnola such as the similarly posed Venus Sleeping in a Landscape from around 1510 (Hind 13). This print, probably a collaboration between Campagnola and Giorgione, owes a great deal to the latter's Venus Sleeping in a Landscape, oil, circa 1508, in the richness of tone and descritpion of volume.
