Painter, Etcher, b. 1632 - d. 1705

(b Naples, Italy 1632; d Naples, Italy, 1705) Italian painter and draughtsman. Giordano was one of the most celebrated artists of the Neapolitan Baroque School. Born in Naples in 1632, Giordano was the son of a painter, Antonio Giordano (c. 1597-1683), under whom he initially trained. However, it was Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652) who had the greatest impact on his developing style. Giordano may have worked in Ribera's studio, and his early works show a marked preference for half-length figures of old men and philosophers against dark backgrounds, made famous by his master. After Ribera's death in 1652, Giordano took the opportunity to travel to Rome where he continued his studies.* Known as 'Fa Presto' ('works quickly'), he became a prolific painter whose vast output included altarpieces, mythological paintings and many decorative cycles in both palaces and churches. Giordano moved away from the darker tenebrism practiced by Caravaggio and his followers, assimilating instead the ideas of light and glowing color, movement and dramatic action of the 16th-century Venetian artists and the Roman master Pietro da Cortona.** (Credit: *Christie’s, London, Important Old Master and British Pictures Including works from the Collection of Anton Philips, December 6, 2007, lot 68; **Christie’s, New York, Important Old Master Paintings, January 26, 2001, lot 33)

LUCA GIORDANO Naples 1634 - 1705 Saint Sebastian Oil on canvas Dimensions 122 x 96.5 cm Provenance: - Caylus Gallery, Madrid, 2001. - Private collection, Madrid. This moving Saint Sebastian painted around 1660 is a good example of Luca Giordano's technical mastery in composing a work of great drama without renouncing the mysticism that characterizes many of his religious works. The Herculean figure of Saint Sebastian is presented in a classical pose inspired by Renaissance canons but intensified by the drama of the Baroque. His almost idealized torso contrasts with the cruelty of the arrows that pierce his body. The tenebrist lighting is articulated through a light source that is projected onto the saint's naked body, highlighting his muscles against a dark background where one of the executioners appears. This contrast not only emphasises the physical suffering, but also alludes to the spiritual tension between martyrdom and salvation. The use of warm colours in contrast with the delicate texture of the skin suggests the influence of the great Venetian masters. Giordano manages to compose a Saint Sebastian who seems to rise to the divine, representing the martyr as a symbol of unwavering faith in the face of adversity. Researcher Nicola Spinosa has related this work to the Burial of Christ at the Detroit Museum, a moment when Giordano abandons the strong naturalism of his early works for other more tempered solutions influenced by Flemish and Venetian artists.

DIOGENES Öl auf Leinwand. 104 x 162 cm.

Luca Giordano (Naples 1634 - 1705) Death of Cato Oil on canvas 154 x 232 The artwork, recently discovered in a private collection, is fascinating because of the many repentances that can be observed, such as suggesting that it is an autograph. In this regard, observe the variations in the posture of Cato's arms, the widening of the arch at the top and the lengthening of the iron where the parrot rests, and the ongoing adaptations of almost all the faces. Finally, the fast and incisive pictorial execution should be noted, a peculiarity that earned Giordano the nickname "Luca fa presto". Other versions of this subject are known: an oil on canvas (179.7 x 260.5), circa 1699, which appeared on the New York antiques market at Pietro Corsini, believed to be autograph and published as such by Oreste Ferrari and Giuseppe Scavizzi, in Luca Giordano-The complete work, photo 845 page 822 and file A648 pages. 350 and 351; an autograph version given in the aforementioned monographic text but considered to be a workshop by the French museum system is preserved in the Musée Denon of Chalon-sur-Saone; finally, another version considered of lower quality and/or workshop is preserved in the Chamber of Deputies in Rome.

(Naples 1634–1705) Euclid, indistinctly signed on the sheet of paper: L. Jordan…, oil on canvas, 114.5 x 97 cm, framed The present painting relates to a composition by Luca Giordano in the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (inv. no. 452), which is also signed and accompanied by a pendant depicting Archimedes (inv. no. 452-453). The Berlin paintings are attributed to the early phase of Luca Giordano’s career, a period during which his style remained strongly influenced by Ribera. Other Philosophers by Giordano, include the so-called Pittacus or Democritus in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (inv. no. HK-782) and the Cynic Philosopher – usually identified as Crates – now in Palazzo Barberini, Rome (inv. no. 1254). These works share with this Euclid the heroic tone in which the elderly sages are depicted, a characteristic derived from Ribera, but further enhanced by Giordano’s use of theatrical and Baroque gestures. Around 1664, Giordano made his first visit to Venice, and it is possible that the present painting was created for a Venetian collector, like the pair of paintings in Berlin. Venice had been home to a flourishing community of publishers and printers since the 15th century, playing a key role in disseminating major classical texts, both in Latin and in Italian translation (see V. Gavagna, Euclide a Venezia, in: E. Giusti and M. Martelli (eds.), Pacioli 500 anni, Sansepolcro 2010, pp. 97–123; A. Cotugno and D.A. Lines (eds.), Venezia e Aristotele, Venice 2016). During his early training in his native Naples, Giordano absorbed the fundamentals of the Caravaggesque tradition. After Ribera’s death in 1652, he traveled to Rome at the age of twenty. Here, he developed a greater freedom of expression, and following his first journey to Venice, his palette took on a newfound vibrancy. On a return visit to Venice in 1674, he created his influential works for the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. Furthermore, he secured prestigious commissions in Naples, as well as in Padua, Florence, and elsewhere. Later, from 1692 to 1702, Giordano served as court painter to King Charles II of Spain, executing significant decorative cycles in Toledo Cathedral and the Palacio del Buen Retiro in Madrid.

LUCA GIORDANO (Naples, 1634 - 1705). "St. Anne with the Virgin". Oil on canvas. Relined. Measurements: 77 x 60 cm; 85 x 70 cm (frame). This work presents great similarities with the painting of Luca Giordano, located in the Church Dei Cappuccini, of Noci, located in the south of Italy. Through a simple pyramidal composition of classical character, the author places Saint Anne and the Child in the center of a border that closes the composition, thus creating an intimate scene where the tenderness between mother and daughter coexists with the majesty of the protagonists. The author presents us with the figure of Saint Anne, rotund and monumental, who serves as a shelter and support for her daughter. The grandeur and determination of the forms make up a scene of scenographic and triumphal character, where the light falls on the protagonists in a kindly way providing a great radiance. It is an example of the most advanced and decorative moment of this language, typically baroque. Luca Giordano was the most prominent Neapolitan painter of the late seventeenth century, and one of the main representatives of the last Italian Baroque.painter and engraver, known in Spain as Lucas Jordan, Giordano enjoyed great popularity during his lifetime, both in his native Italy and in our country. However, after his death his work was often criticized for its speed of execution, opposed to the Greco-Latin aesthetics. It is believed that he was formed in the environment of Ribera, whose style he followed at first. However, he soon traveled to Rome and Venice, where he studied Veronese, whose influence has been felt ever since in his work. This trip was key to the maturation of his style, as well as the influences of other artists such as Mattia Preti, Rubens, Bernini and, above all, Pietro da Cortona. At the end of the 1670s Giordano began his great mural decorations (Montecassino and San Gregorio Armeno in Naples), which were followed from 1682 by other projects, including the mural paintings in the gallery and library of the Palazzo Medici Ricardi in Florence. In 1692 he was called to Madrid to carry out mural works in the monastery of El Escorial, where he worked from 1692 to 1694. Later he also painted the office and bedroom of Charles II in the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, and after these he undertook the paintings of the Casón del Buen Retiro (ca. 1697), the sacristy of the cathedral of Toledo (1698), the royal chapel of the Alcázar and San Antonio de los Portugueses (1699). However, royal commissions ceased with the arrival of Philip V in 1701 and the beginning of the War of Succession, so Giordano returned to Naples in 1702, although from there he continued to send paintings to Spain. Today Giordano's works are kept in the most important art galleries around the world, including the Prado Museum, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Louvre in Paris, the Kunsthistorisches in Vienna, the Metropolitan in New York and the National Gallery in London.

Luca Giordano is one of the most relevant figures of the European Baroque. A prolific painter, his career developed between his native Naples and the court of Madrid, where he resided between 1692 and 1702. His early biographers indicate that he was trained in the style of Ribera, whose style he imitated during his early years. His ability to imitate and copy the old masters would lead him to imitate the style of Rafael Sanzio, as shown in some of the paintings preserved in the Prado Museum. His time in Venice and Rome is also evident in his work, especially with regard to Pietro da Cortona. A good example of this is this Holy Family with St. John, dated by Ferrari and Scavizzi around 1660. It shows the physical types of Cortona's paintings such as his Adoration of the Shepherds of San Salvatore in Lauro. On the other hand, the space with classical ruins in which the figures are inserted is related to contemporary paintings by Giordano as his St. Anne with the Child Virgin of the Church of the Assumption in Chiaia (1657) or Christ among the doctors of Bolognese private collection (ca. 1660). The painting was first documented in 1664 by Milkovich in the Wells College Museum in Aurora. It was also collected there by Ferrari and Scavizzi in 1992, who also studied it and dated it to around 1660." Literatur: Vgl. Oreste Ferrari, Giuseppe Scavizzi, Luca Giordano, Neapel 2000.

            Est: €12,000 - €15,000

Pair of oil paintings on canvas, each measures: 50 x 40 cm, framed measures: 70 x 60 cm. Son of a modest painter, Antonio Giordano, his friendship with José de Ribera marked his life. Luca soon began to work with Ribera in his Neapolitan workshop, and due to the great influence of the Spanish artist and the numerous trips to Rome, Venice and other cities, in search of greater knowledge of the different techniques of the time, he became one of the best baroque artists. Also, in Venice, he received the influence of Giovanni Battista Spinelli in his early works. Giordano acquired a style that fused Venetian and Roman. He combined the ornamental pomp of Paolo Veronese with more lively complex schemes "in the grand manner" of Pietro da Cortona. In Venice he painted frescoes in the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. Between 1682-83 he painted several series of frescoes in Florence, including the dome of the Corsini Chapel in the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine. In the block occupied by the old Medici Palace he painted the ceiling of the Biblioteca Riccardiana (Wisdom liberated from the Slavery of Ignorance) and the immense ceiling of the gallery of the Medici Riccardi Palace. The frescoes include in the center the prototypical hagiographic celebration of the Medici family surrounded by a series of intertwined narrative spaces: allegorical figures (Cardinal Virtues, Elements of Nature) and mythological episodes (Neptune and Amphitrite, the Abduction of Proserpine, the Triumphal Procession of Bacchus, the Death of Adonis, Ceres and Triptolemus). Luca Giordano and Spain, Royal Palace Exhibition Catalog (March 7-June 2, 2002), National Heritage, Madrid, 2002. Provenance: important private collection from Barcelona (lots 450 to 462)
