La bordure au dauphin sur le titre, l'une des plus marquantes du XVIυe siècle ("one of the most influential pieces of ornamentation of the sixteenth century" Mortimer), fut utilisée ici très probablement pour la première fois. Vitruve est l'auteur du seul traité d'architecture que l'Antiquité nous ait transmis. Cette édition, comportant les notes critiques de l'architecte Fra Giovanni Giocondo, est dédiée au pape Jules II. Elle fut accueillie avec ferveur: la belle et riche iconographie compensait les obscurités notoires du texte. On y trouve, par exemple, le premier plan d'un théâtre antique, huit ans avant les fouilles du théâtre Marcellus à Rome. Le huitième livre traite de l'hydraulique, le neuvième est consacrée à la gnomonique et le dixième à la mécanique appliquée ainsi qu'aux machines de guerre.
