Allen Ginsberg (after) (American, 1926-1997) Untitled #3 (AH), 1998 Color lithograph and serigraph on paper 30 1/4" x 23 1/4" Estate-signed, pencil-numbered (11/ 36) to the bottom margin, alongside a Gemini G.E.L. chop mark. The glazed frame measures 36 1/2" x 29 1/2" x 1 1/4". "Untitled #3" includes two instances of Ginsberg's "AH" mantra (reversed in the print, in the sun at the top left and the sunflower at the bottom right), inspired by William Blake's poem "Ah! Sun-flower," the subject of a formative hallucination experienced by Ginsberg in 1948.

Allen Ginsberg 14 Letters to Jan Kerouac "no need to mirror 'The Road' - your name already mirrors your father sufficient" Fantastic!

        Est: $4,000 - $5,000

Allen Ginsberg Fantastic Archive of Signed Letters to Jan Kerouac Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997). Archive of 14 pieces of correspondence to Jack Kerouac's only child, daughter Janet "Jan" Kerouac (1952-1996), ranging in size from 3.5" x 5.5" to 8.5" x 11". Twelve pieces by Ginsberg consist of six handwritten postcards signed "Allen" or "Allen Ginsberg", five handwritten letters signed "Allen" or "Allen Ginsberg" with mailing envelopes, and one printed letter with envelope. Also included are two handwritten postcards by Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021) signed "Lawrence Ferlinghetti" and "Lawrence F." Ginsberg's longtime partner, Peter Orlovsky (1933-2010), has added several lines to some of the letters and envelopes. Varying degrees of expected wear include light soiling, creasing and folds. Overall, the archive is in near fine condition. Though Jan Kerouac only met her father a couple of times when she was a teen, after his death she followed in his footsteps. Her published works consist of three semi-autobiographical novels: Baby Driver: A Story About Myself in 1981; Trainsong in 1988; and posthumously published in 2000, Parrot Fever. This archive gives a glimpse into Jan’s life as she began to move in the literary circles that included her father’s peers, and the support they provided her. Throughout the archive, Ginsberg offers Kerouac advice on the publishing industry and offers feedback on her writing.  Excerpts, in chronological order: - Letter from Ginsberg dated September 7, 1977: "Ferlinghetti / City Lights is putting together his bi-annual Journal, is looking for prose, so try him for your opening section of mss." Postscript: "Burroughs Jr. is a great writer, too." - Postcard from Ginsberg dated September 27, 1977: "Yeah, but send in a dear piece of prose, some small section 10 - 20 pages, for City Lights, I bet they'll like it. That'll encourage you to push forward. Glad you're busy & without weight on your shoulders. The poems are funny." Peter Orlovsky then adds a few lines, as written: "Good to hear from you. Don't understand yr poems to well but send me some more. Glad to hear yr writing...Keep writting yr work." - Letter from Ginsberg dated November 18, 1977: "I thought your writing stood up on its own, & if you do want to write & publish, stick to your original Everthreads or equivalent title, no need to mirror 'The Road' - your name already mirrors your father sufficient, & your prose is your own extension of your named self, no need to fall back on gimmick, I was really proud of what you wrote, that I saw." - Postcard from Ferlinghetti dated November 29, 1977: "Excited about your EVER-THREADS & have read enuf to say I want to use this Part One in City Lights Journal, going to typesetter this Monday...do you have publisher for whole book?" - Postcard from Ginsberg undated, but postmarked March 14, 1978: "I heard Ferlinghetti is publishing your mss. some of it, that's true? You mention that in your letter...For the love of God don't sign anything (contracts) till you examine & see clearly what abuse will be done to Jack's anthology. Ask Carolyn Cassady - she sold rights to Neal Cassady's story & now regrets the stupid vulgar script done in Hollywood. Be careful!" - Postcard from Ginsberg dated July 27, 1978: "The script Carolyn's TVTV people sent me was so vulgarly stereotyped...I think it's disgusting, and Carolyn thought the script was disgusting too - I just mean, badly written, full of historical errors, a psychic rip-off of [Jack] Kerouac & [Neal] Cassady's own artistic myth creations." - Letter from Ginsberg dated May 29, 1982: "Of the poems, I liked the few lines 1969 oyaja-nine...a tiny spray of starshine. The other pages seemed preliminary & casual free-associations & rhyme with no center...Contract I read - I couldn't find where exactly, you get what percent of foreign translation rights." - Postcard from Ferlinghetti dated October 1, 1985: "Yes, we would love to read your new mss. for possible use in CLJ #5. Send it soon." - Postcard from Ginsberg undated, but postmarked 1988: "I don't remember the other suggestion maybe J.K.'s ex editor (Cody) & old friend Joyce Johnson, formerly of McGraw Hill...Congratulations on your publication." Allen Ginsberg Signs a Classmate's 1943 Yearbook, Includes his 1st Published Poem

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Allen Ginsberg Signs a Classmate's 1943 Yearbook, Includes his 1st Published Poem Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997). An Eastside High School "The Senior Mirror" yearbook, Patterson, New Jersey, June 1943, originally owned by Ginsberg's classmate, Estelle Verner. Signed below Ginsberg's yearbook photo and inscribed to Verner, "You're smart and you do look well, I might have known: your name's Estelle / Allen Ginsberg". Expected age wear to boards and bumping to corners. Light soiling and toning to pages. In overall near fine condition. In 1943, Allen Ginsberg was a senior at Eastside High School, where he served as the literary editor of "The Senior Mirror" yearbook. The entry beside his photo reads: "'Professor' is the philosopher and genius of the class...hopes to study law...Talent Club President, Criterion, Big Brother, Senior Mirror...fiend for Beethoven and Charlie Chaplin...indulges in music, politics, history, literature...Gold 'P'...hates dull teachers and Republicans." Ginsberg's poem titled "Class Poem" takes up a full page of the yearbook, and this is the first time that Ginberg's poetry appeared in print. Although a few of his articles were published in the 1941 issue of "The Central High Spectator", this was his first published poem. The poem reads, in part: "For these are giant times, and history / Is fashioned as the minutes burn away. / Buildings of old beliefs are being bombed, / And rotted walls are crumbling down today. / Ready are we to meet the challenge hurled: / To battle, conquer, and rebuild the world".  Ginsberg transferred from Central High to Eastside High for his junior and senior years. His English teacher, Frances Durbin, was the first person to introduce Ginsberg to Walt Whitman; Ginsberg later recalled this as being his most memorable school day. Durbin also suggested that he take a look at the poetry of Hart Crane. At his High School reunion in 1968, as quoted in Wait Till I'm Dead: Uncollected Poems, Ginsberg re-read "Class Poem" and commented, "Oh well, there it is. Doesn't seem to be much change in the world after twenty-five years". This yearbook offers one a fascinating look at a young Ginsberg, providing a glimpse into his early personality, political views and career aspirations. • Ginsberg, Corso & Duncan, Original Program for 1956 Poetry Reading
        May. 31, 2023

Ginsberg, Corso & Duncan, Original Program for 1956 Poetry Reading

        Est: $800 - $1,000

Ginsberg, Corso & Duncan, Original Program for 1956 Poetry Reading Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997). Gregory Corso (1930-2001). Typed program, "Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso reading from their work", 2pp, 8.5" x 11", San Francisco, CA, October 21, 1956. Two staples at left margin. Flattened folds, minor creases, toning. Text at central horizontal fold has lightened, but is still completely legible. In overall near fine condition. The poetry reading was held at the San Francisco State University Poetry Center. This original program was written entirely by fellow poet Robert Duncan (1919-1988), who shortly before this event, was appointed assistant director of the center. His introduction begins with a debate on who the greatest poet is. He mentions many, but ultimately, Duncan extols the work of both Ginsberg and Corso, describing the reading as "a historic event". This was Corso's first public reading. Despite a large and expectant crowd of more than 500 people, Ginsberg did not read from Howl that evening, much to their disappointment. Ginsberg and Corso were anxious to get on the road, as they were hitchhiking south on their way to Mexico to meet up with Jack Kerouac, but had an important stop in Los Angeles. There the pair had a reading scheduled for October 30th, sponsored by the literary magazine, Coastlines. This small reading, held in a boarding house, would become one of Ginsberg’s most famous, second only to the Six Gallery reading in terms of notoriety, where he presented Howl for the first time. • Allen Ginsberg To Neal Cassady! Signed Zen Buddhist Manual, "The Ten Oxherding Pictures"
        May. 31, 2023

Allen Ginsberg To Neal Cassady! Signed Zen Buddhist Manual, "The Ten Oxherding Pictures"

        Est: $10,000 - $12,000

Allen Ginsberg To Neal Cassady! Signed Zen Buddhist Manual, "The Ten Oxherding Pictures" A copy of "The Ten Oxherding Pictures" by Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki. Kyoto: Sekai Seiten Kanko Kyokai, 1948. Signed and inscribed by Allen Ginsberg to Neal Cassady: "For Neal / & Family / June 1953 / - Allen New York." The book measures 5" x 7.25" and runs 32pp, unpaginated. A vertical fold from top to bottom at middle-right appears on all pages. Front cover has light tearing at corners and soiling at left margin from binding staples. Expected age toning and scattered foxing to pages. Housed in a pristine velvet-lined black case with gilt titling, 5.75" x 8", custom made by The Chelsea Bindery. Ginsberg gifted this copy to Cassady for his birthday in 1953, the year both men turned 27 years old. In published correspondence between Ginsberg and Cassady in June of 1953, this specific volume is mentioned: "Dear Neal / Your letter arrived on June 5, a little late for my 27th birthday, this ought to arrive a little late for yours (is it late June?) I enclose a small birthday present, a book of mystical pictures which are self explanatory & very amuzing (10 Bulls) I think I mentioned it as part of Zen stories, in last letter." The gift was well-received, albeit belated, as noted in Cassady's reply several days later, on June 29, 1953: "Dear Allen, Oriental Ogler / Thanks for oxherd pictures, I like much. My birthday Feb 8." This was an important year for Ginsberg and his spiritual journey. He was inspired to share his experience with his friends after encountering Buddhism for the very first time during a visit to the First Zen Institute of New York City that year, where he examined Buddhist teachings in the Zen Institute’s library.  "The Ten Oxherding Pictures" is a series of short poems and accompanying drawings used in the Zen tradition to describe the stages of a practitioner's progress toward enlightenment, and their return to society to enact wisdom and compassion. The earliest version was probably made in the 11th century and contained only five pictures, in which the ox's color changes from dark to light, representing the gradual development of the practitioner. The ox is one of the original metaphors for meditation practice. Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) was an American poet and writer. As a student at Columbia University in the 1940s, he began friendships with William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac, forming the core of the Beat Generation. Ginsberg vigorously opposed militarism, economic materialism, and sexual repression, and he embodied various aspects of this counterculture with his views on drugs, sex, multiculturalism, hostility to bureaucracy, and openness to Eastern religions. One of his most significant, and most controversial, proponents was his openness about homosexuality. Ginsberg is best known for his poem "Howl" (1956), which he dedicated to writer Carl Solomon (1928-1993). It is considered to be one of the great works of American literature. Neal Cassady (1926-1968) was a major figure of the Beat Generation of the 1950s and the psychedelic and counterculture movements of the 1960s. He was prominently featured as himself in the first draft version of Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road, and served as the model for the character Dean Moriarty in the 1957 version of that book. In many of Kerouac's later books, Cassady is represented by the character Cody Pomeray. Cassady also appeared in Allen Ginsberg's poems, and in several other works of literature by other writers. Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki (1870-1966) was a Japanese-American Buddhist monk, philosopher, religious scholar, translator, and writer. His essays on Buddhism, Zen and Shin were instrumental in spreading interest in Far Eastern philosophy to the West. Suzuki was also a prolific translator of Chinese, Japanese, and Sanskrit literature. Suzuki spent several lengthy stretches teaching or lecturing at Western universities. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1963.
