Follower of Johann Zoffany Portrait of a Draftsman Oil on canvas 39 1/2 x 28 inches (100.4 x 71 cm) It has been suggested that this portrait may be by the English history painter Henry Singleton (1766-1839) and that the sitter may be the Reverend William Gilpin (1724-1804), an artist, writer, and enthusiastic collector of prints and drawings. While still at Oxford, Gilpin published his Dialogue upon the Gardens ... at Stow[sic]in Buckinghamshire (1748), part guide to the gardens at Stowe and part essay on aesthetics, which enjoyed considerable success among educated readers. Through his writings on gardens and related subjects Gilpin become one of the originators of the Romantic ideal of the Picturesque. C Estate of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.
