LAURA GILPIN HUGHES HOUSE DENVER EARLY Pictorial

    Est: $200 - $400

LAURA GILPIN, The Hughes House, Denver Colorado, 1928 Gelatin Silver print 7.5x9.6" on 8x10" paper ASG# LG/1343. Print is cornered in original Gilpin mat and signed and dated over mat in Gilpin's hand. Photograph by Laura Gilpin Colorado Springs verso of print. Print had been mounted down with tape when found and there is tape residue on mount and print margins. The print is a light gray blue tone to harmonize with this pictorial rendering. She made a series of views houses in Denver designed by the firm Fisher and Fisher. Laura Gilpin (1891-1979) photographed the American Southwest for more than sixty years, creating an extraordinary document of the land and its people. A contemporary of Mary Austin, Willa Cather, and Georgia O'Keeffe, she was unique among the women chroniclers of the Southwest in that photography was her medium of expression. Gilpin was born on April 22, 1891, in Austin Bluffs, Colorado. After studying photography with Clarence White in New York she returned to Colorado to photograph the place she knew best. Through the early 1930's she produced a series of platinum and silver print masterpieces on textured paper in the pictorial tradition of Alfred Stieglitz, Clarence White, Edward Steichen, Gertrude Kasebier and others. These photographs are exemplary of the finest early twentieth century photo-secession art movement. Beginning in the early 1930's and continuing throughout her life, she made sharper edged images of the Pueblo and Navaho Indians and landscapes of unparalleled beauty of the Southwest. She moved to Santa Fe in the mid 1940s where she resided until her death in 1979. Andrew Smith who grew up in Santa Fe was a friend of Gilpin's in the 1970s, visiting with her and purchasing photographs from her.

LAURA GILPIN Red Rock Trading Post

    Est: $2,000 - $4,000

LAURA GILPIN Red Rock Trading Post, 1934, 7.5x9.3" Gelatin Silver Print on 8x10" Paper printed 1970s. Mounted on 13.75" rag board with Gilpin's 1970s Santa Fe Label Verso. Very fine print sold at the time of her death. ASG# LG/1581 One of Gilpin's key images on the Navajo Reservation showing a gathering of Indians in the cool dark interior of the trading post. She began photographing the Navajo in the late 1920s and continued to photograph there through the 1970s. The work from this is considered one of her two major mid-career projects, the other being to document and photograph along the Rio Grande. The result of the work was the publication of The Enduring Navajo in 1968 and numerous exhibitions.

Laura Gilpin, “Steps to the Castillo at Chichen Itza.”

    Est: $3,750 - $4,500

Laura Gilpin, “Steps to the Castillo at Chichen Itza.” Vintage warm toned ferrotyped gelatin silver print on double weight paper, 1932, 9 ¼ x 6 ¾ inches. An attached snipe reads “These photos show voyage moments taken in the enchanting land of ancient Aztec culture, Yucatan, province of Mexico.” The cover of her 1948 book Temples in Yucatan is a slight variant of this image (a lesser one in my opinion.) At the advice of her mentor Gertrude Käsebier, Gilpin attended the Clarence White School in NYC at the age of 25. She grew up in Colorado and some of her most notable work deals with Navajo culture. Her interest in native culture and also architecture led her to this Aztec subject. Gilpin’s credit stamp is on the verso, along with a PIX label and a pencil title.
