Literally No Place (for Parkett 61)

            Est: €500 - €700

GILLICK, LIAM 1964 Aylesbury Title: Literally No Place (for Parkett 61). Date: 2001. Technique: 5 coloured plexiglass plates and 3 coloured aluminium plates, variably interlockable on Depiction Size: Plates each: 25cm. Sheet Size: 20,5cm. 0,5 Notation: Signed and numbered on enclosed certificate. Publisher: Parkett-Verlag, Zurich (publisher). Number: 1/70. Condition: Two aluminium plates with two minimal scratches each. Otherwise in very good condition. With enclosed certificate. With Parkett magazine. "Gillick's platforms - Plexiglas panels in aluminum frames - do not obey gravity and lie on the floor like Andre's carpets of metal panels that viewers can step on. No, they are suspended from the ceiling, parallel to the floor so that viewers must tilt their heads to look up at the platforms and the way they are mounted. In his boxed and wall constructions, he uses materials like Plexiglas, plywood, pine, and aluminum as Donald Judd did before him, but without giving viewers the feeling of knowing where they stand. Instead they are awash with feelings of enigmatic and fluttering indeterminacy." Gregor Stemmrich, Parkett no. 61, 2001. Article on the work and artist from Parkett edition no. 61. Signed, dated and titled (hammered) 'LIAM GILLICK 2001 RESOLUTION PLATFORM'' on the aluminium. In his works, the British object and installation artist, critic, curator and literary Liam Gillick analyses particular places, their social conditions and the possibilites which arise from the defined space. ''With the platforms and partitions, Gillick continues his architectural discourse. These are usually colourful, rectangular surfaces, divided and finished by aluminium strips. This also includes […] plattforms which Gillick designs as spatial interventions and offers as an 'enclosed zone to reflect on interaction, transfer of information and strategy' (Gillick) in the showroom. Their formal and materially reduced appearance is reminiscent of minimalist works of the 1960s; Gillick describes his interest in these spatial interventions however with conceptual considerations. The question of the possibilties of art in relation to non-artistic reality are central to the work. He deals with politics in aesthetic, formal and fictional categories thus emphasising not only the constructed nature of existing discourses, but also the possibilites of alternative ways of thinking.'' (Rachel Mader, Liam Gillick, in: Allgemeines Künstler-Lexikon, vol. 54, Munich et.al. 2007, p.197).
