                Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Given the complexity of each work and his unique manipulation of each object, it is almost incorrect to describe them as multiples. In the case of this image, while the edition is 49, every one of them has variant qualities which make them unique.

                Oct. 26, 2024

ATTR SAM GILLIAM AMERICAN ABSTRACT ACRYLIC PAINTING

                Est: $100 - $150

Attributed to Sam Gilliam, Jr., American, 1933 to 2022, acrylic painting on canvas mounted on board depicting an abstract expressionist composition. Signed lower right. Framed. Sam Gilliam Jr is known for Abstract color field and drape painting, collage, graphics. Abstract Color Field painter Sam Gilliam was born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1933, growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, where he received an MA in painting at the University of Louisville in 1961. He received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters at the University of Louisville in 1980 and Northwestern University in 1990. Gilliams present work has its origins in paintings he made in the early 1980s. He was then literally raking huge quantities of acrylic paint and gel across a large canvas, then cutting the canvas into fairly regular geometric shapes; triangles and rectangles, wedges and arcs, and stitching the parts together in an improvisational way almost like a crazy quilt. While the resulting compositions were in fact quite flat, their colliding geometries and their vibrant colors made the surfaces seem to pulsate and jump. American Fine Art, Abstract Expressionist Paintings, Wall Art, and Collectibles. One of a kind artwork.

                Oct. 26, 2024

ABSTRACT ACRYLIC PAINTING SIGNED SAM GILLIAM

                Est: $100 - $150

An acrylic on board painting depicting an abstract expressionist composition in red, blue, black and white colors. Signed upper left: Sam Gilliam. Sam Gilliam, 1933 to 2022, was one of the great innovators in postwar American painting. He emerged from the Washington, D.C. scene in the mid-1960s with works that elaborated upon and disrupted the ethos of Color School painting. A series of formal breakthroughs would soon result in his canonical Drape paintings, which expanded upon the tenets of Abstract Expressionism in entirely new ways. Inspired by the improvisatory ethos of jazz, his lyrical abstractions continue to take on an increasing variety of forms, moods, and materials. One of a kind artwork.
