Gillberg f." below the image; numbered "56" in handwriting on the backing at upper right. Date: 18th century Description: Jacob Gillberg studied at Uppsala University from 1747-49; scholarship in Paris, where he learned the technique of the crayon manner, which he later introduced to Sweden. Known for his precise and detailed illustrations, with which he made a significant contribution to the art of 18th century book illustration. Gillberg is, along with Per Gustaf Floding, the most remarkable graphic artist of the 18th century in Sweden.
