Acquired directly from the above in 1990. An American Private Collection. Shannon's, Milford, sale of October 29, 2015, lot 65. Acquired directly from the above sale. Private Collection, New York, New York; and Florida. The (apparently) unlined canvas in overall good condition. With slight abrasions along the outer edges of the canvas (invisible when the work is unframed) and a faint scratch on the faraway house at bottom right (along the right outer edge of the canvas). Examination under UV light reveals loose, and broad restoration in the sky, mostly at upper left and upper center, but we do notice purplish elements along the overall mountain range. With pinpoint dots of retouching at bottom center (on the ice) and on some parts of the roof of the main house at center. See specialist's pictures for more details.

    "Trenton Falls", in the Barbizon palette, with four tiny human figures downstream in the chasm for scale, oil on canvas, signed lower left and dated 1848, in the original monumental Victorian gold gesso frame, OS: 40 1/2" x 48 1/2", SS: 29" x 38". Very good condition. Gignoux was a French artist who studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under the French historical painter Hippolyte Delaroche and was active in the United States from 1840 to 1870, known for seasonal landscapes.
